Historia
Dr. Robert Judson Cole travels from his ravaged Scotland homeland, through the operating rooms of Boston, to the cabins of frontier Illinois. In the wilderness he befriends the starving remnants of the Sauk tribe, who have fled their reservation. In the process, he absorbs their culture and learns native remedies that enrich the classical medical education he received at Edinburgh University. He marries a remarkable settler woman he had saved from illness.

Loved it all.
Revisado: 02-03-19
I like historical fiction redolent with description of scenery... weather.. cooking.. all the manners of the time. And a plot w depth... complexity.. characters who both surprise and inspire me
It's hard to find authors & works that satisfy.
In this case.. I leave the world of this novel reluctantly... but deeply. satisfied on all levels.

Historia
In the autumn of 1938, Germany's reichsführer, Heinrich Himmler, is growing frustrated at the British using their regional power in India to block the passage of an SS expedition to Tibet. Determined to spite them, he plots to steal something the British hold dear and have failed for the seventh time that spring to achieve: a first summit of Mount Everest. Seventy years later, seasoned mountain guide Neil Quinn's ninth visit to the top of the world's highest mountain, this time in charge of the 16-year-old son of a Long Island billionaire, begins to unravel.

FINALLY... another book to "keep me"!
Revisado: 04-29-18
What did you love best about Summit?
I love a book that "takes me to another reality" via poetic wordsmithing of settings... plot... characters. I also look for books that inspire.. believable tales of men and women facing challenges that call for choices that build character and morals. If there is historic info "on offer" as well... a delightful bonus!
Since I finished 2-3 listens Winston Graham's Poldark series, I have sunk mucho dinaro and time seeking a "listen" that can "keep me" the ways those novels did.
This Mountaineering saga: Harry Farthing's magnificent debut tale has f i n a l l y met that lofty personal standard. I am already re-reading and re-savoring parts of it. I am l o v i n g being in the mountains... dealing with political, cultural and historical challenges... testing my limits... eagerly turning those "audio pages" as I scrub my kitchen pans or trot with the dog along the sidewalk.
AND... I usually steer away from "author-read" audibles. In this case... Farthing has just what's needed audibly to draw me into the mountaineering worlds he has created.

Historia
The Twisted Sword is the 11th in Winston Graham's sweeping series of Cornwall, Poldark. Cornwall, 1815. Demelza sees a horseman riding down the valley and senses disruption to the domestic contentment she has fought so hard to achieve. For Ross has little option but to accept the summons - and travel to Paris with his family as an 'observer' of the French armed forces.

Such a nourishing escape... and lense.
Revisado: 09-02-17
Now I move on to the last in the series: Bella Poldark.
These novels are such a refuge from the ugliness and confusion of our current times
Clearly there was as much mess and overwhelm in the late 1700s n early 1800s... and Graham does not avoid the challenges of that era.
But he portrays the Cornwall (and French) countryside and folk of low and high station with such lush verbal artistry, that I come away seeing more the beauty in my current suroundings and doings much more.
I treasure escaping to the absorbing and beautiful world Graham has fashioned... and the way I find greater value in my "today" his artistry tunes me to.

Historia
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

I LOVED this long book. I loved dancing back and forth between "my" young adult life of the 60s and today's world: how accurate was it's language and historic flavor.
And the audible rendition was flawless.
