Historia
Savine dan Glokta, once Adua's most powerful investor, finds her judgement, fortune and reputation in tatters. But she still has all her ambitions, and no scruple will be permitted to stand in her way. For heroes like Leo dan Brock and Stour Nightfall, only happy with swords drawn, peace is an ordeal to end as soon as possible. But grievances must be nursed, power seized, and allies gathered first, while Rikke must master the power of the Long Eye...before it kills her.

I'll talk, no action
Revisado: 11-07-24
I truly did enjoy the first law trilogy. it was a great mix of grittiness, camaraderie and action that reminded me of old school swords and sandals and swords and sorcery fiction.
just following series is not that. it's not that by half. This is 90% dialogue and 10% action, and the action itself is rather minor.
I believe Joe Abercrombie has demonstrated to the world that he can be an incredible writer. This series is not it. it's all exposition and fluff and, quite frankly, boring crap that I would expect from a female writer of the genre.
The first law series was great. Joe is capable of writing great stuff. however, if this is the kind of thing he's going to continue to write, then no thank you.
I'd rather Stick with somebody like Schuyler Hernstrom, who has only written short stories, but are absolutely phenomenal

Historia
More than 3,000 years have passed since the first events recorded in Dune. Only one link survives with those tumultuous times: the grotesque figure of Leto Atreides, son of the prophet Paul Muad'Dib, and now the virtually immortal God Emperor of Dune. He alone understands the future, and he knows with a terrible certainty that the evolution of his race is at an end unless he can breed new qualities into his species.

Preachy, Nothing Happens
Revisado: 05-11-24
Very preachy. Reflecting back on the story, nothing actually happens. There's very little action. The characters do not really evolve or change in any large manner.
Here are the big events (spoiler): Leto begins to feel some human emotions. Duncan believes Leto is a tyrant. Leto dies.
That's it. hundreds of pages for all that.
The rest of the book is Herbert spouting off his theories about government, civilization, the environment, homosexuality, women and the general nature of man.

Feels Dragged Out
Revisado: 12-24-20
I enjoy this story line. It definitely has its roots in swords and sorcery. However, I feel the story line is being dragged out, with too little meaningful progress happening in this book. It needs to move along more

For over a century, humans, dwarves, gnomes, and elves have lived together in relative peace. But times have changed, the uneasy peace is over, and now the races are fighting once again. The only good elf, it seems, is a dead elf. Geralt of Rivia, the cunning assassin known as The Witcher, has been waiting for the birth of a prophesied child. This child has the power to change the world - for good, or for evil.

Good Story. "Ending" is ... meh
Revisado: 12-18-19
this was a fairly well written story. I would say this is slightly better than standard fantasy fare, and I am interested to find out where the story goes.
However the ending lacks any kind of denouement, and just sort of stops. that part was a massive detractor for me.

Needs an Editor
Revisado: 10-22-19
I couldn't make it past the first 10 minutes. the story is an attempt to write in the style of classic swords and sorcery, but it is awkwardly written and the pacing is jarring to say the least. It is very clear that this was not reviewed by any editor worth their salt. the story immediately identifies a weapon of great renown by its name, and then goes on to describe it as a legendary artifact but with no additional detail. Why mention that it is a legendary artifact at all at this time? It's not necessary. Simply indicating the sword has a name would imply that there is a story to it.
Then the protagonist is attacked by 20 goblins, at which point the narrator insists on holding the action and providing you a detailed back story as to what goblins are and how they were created. Why stop the action? Why is that necessary right now?
As much as I like Runehammer material, this book needs an editor.

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Waxes upon the Mundane
Revisado: 07-28-19
too much time is spent on the mundane aspects of daily British society and too little on magic and Fairy. While this is clearly by intent, I did not care for it.

very mediocre. Not bad, but not really good either
Revisado: 06-20-19
While I did listen to the entire book, I began to feel bored approximately 25% of the way through.
The jokes are not terribly funny, The references to 80s and 90s feel very worn out, the characters are boring and the plot is paper-thin and rife with holes.
Over all the writing is very mediocre and uninspiring. I feel like it was written by a high school student.
The first book was funny and someone entertaining, but I really cannot recommend this book
