When October is informed that Simon Torquill - legally her father, due to Faerie's archaic marriage traditions - must be invited to her wedding or risk the ceremony throwing the Kingdom in the Mists into political turmoil, she finds herself setting out on a quest she was not yet prepared to undertake for the sake of her future...and the man who represents her family's past.

Somehow, someway, this series manages to keep on getting better. While there is not a single book in the entire series that I do not like a great deal, this one has instantly become my favorite. I don’t want to say too much more, this is not a book that I am willing to risk giving even the slightest spoiler for. I will add one suggestion for anyone who is new to the series, however. Don’t start here. You really should start at the first book and work your way through that way.

Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues - a bee, a key, and a sword.

Perfection
Revisado: 11-09-19
The Night Circus took my breath away. I have, ever since, simultaneously yearned for and feared a second offering from the author. Could they catch lightning in a bottle twice? What if Jim Dale played too big a part in the magic, and not getting him back lessened the experience? I shouldn’t have worried. Somehow, by some strange alchemy, this book has managed to be even better. It broke my heart. It mended it. Not over the same matters, but multiple times each. I’ve never read anything like this before. and now? I wish it hadn’t ended, but know that it had to.

Historia
Mary Robinette Kowal continues the grand sweep of alternate history begun in The Calculating Stars. The Fated Sky looks forward to 1961, when mankind is well established on the moon and looking forward to its next step: journeying to, and eventually colonizing, Mars. Of course the noted Lady Astronaut Elma York would like to go, but there’s a lot riding on whoever the International Aerospace Coalition decides to send on this historic - but potentially very dangerous - mission. Could Elma really leave behind her husband and the chance to start a family to spend several years traveling to Mars?

Triumphant
Revisado: 09-09-19
“Triumphant” is such a reviewer buzzword, but that is honestly the best word to sum up this book. This whole series, really. I’m deeming these books as must-reads. This is sci-fi that has been humanize, where baking pies and fixing toilets goes hand in hand with EVA’s and landing on an alien planet. Moreover, these books deserve all the praise for portraying a realistically happy marriage. That is, one that has arguments, but never any cracks in the relationship. Wonderful, wonderful books.

Close your eyes and get ready to see the world in a new and more positive way. As a child in Toronto, Molly Burke was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa and became completely sightless as a teenager. Now an award-winning YouTube star and global influencer, Molly shares what it’s like to be a purple-haired, pink-obsessed fashion and makeup lover in a seeing world. Entertaining & Inspiring
Revisado: 08-05-19
I picked this up as one of Audible’s free original programs, and it’s so good that I almost regret it as it is definitely worth a credit or outright payment despite it’s short length. As a blind person, I identified with this book to an almost scary degree, but this is a great listen for sighted people, as well. Molly is engaging and inspiring, not because she’s blind, but because of her outlook on life and facing challenges. I’m a bit social media ignorant, I have little clue about influencers, so this was my first exposure to her, but I am now a subscriber to her YouTube channel.

Historia
In the near future, Britain has given up its constitutional monarchy to become a republic. But though the crown is a museum piece and the family no longer bears its ancient titles, Stephen Windsor feels the stirrings of the lives of ancient sacred kings in his bones, which is not surprising, as at key points in Britain's history, he has been reincarnated to perform the supreme kingly act. And though the throne is empty and forgotten, the land remembers and calls once more for a crown upon a royal head - and royal blood upon the ground.

Unique premise
Revisado: 07-08-19
For a story based in some pretty old traditions, the premise of this novel somehow manages to be unique. Perhaps it’s the contrast of ancient and the near-future, I’m not sure. But I loved it. The only nitpick is actually with the narration. I love this narrator, but think he was the wrong choice for this. A first-person story whose main character is English ought to have been done by someone who can maintain the accent. Aside from that small thing, though, I loved this.

Historia
On a cold spring night in 1952, a huge meteorite fell to earth and obliterated much of the East Coast of the US, including Washington, DC. The ensuing climate cataclysm will soon render the Earth inhospitable for humanity, as the last such meteorite did for the dinosaurs. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated effort to colonize space and requires a much-larger share of humanity to take part in the process. Elma York’s drive to become the first lady astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions of society may not stand a chance against her.

Revisado: 06-20-19
This is a triumphant and Adderly beautiful book. And of course, it’s well read, how could it not be? When it’s written by one of my favourite narrator’s, good narration is just a given. I cannot suggest this book highly enough.

Historia
This fourth entry and prequel tells the story of Lundy, a very serious young girl who would rather study and dream than become a respectable housewife and live up to the expectations of the world around her. As well she should. When she finds a doorway to a world founded on logic and reason, riddles and lies, she thinks she's found her paradise. Alas, everything costs at the goblin market, and when her time there is drawing to a close, she makes the kind of bargain that never plays out well.

Better and better
Revisado: 03-19-17
I've loved this series ever since the debut novel 'Flex'. The worldbuilding is truly unique, with a spin on magic I'd never seen before, the characters weren't carbon copies of every other chistle-jawed hero and svelte heroine we so often see.
Good as Flex was, though, the second book - The Flux - was better still.. and yet. Yet, Fix blew the first two out of the water. This is by far the best of the trilogy, bringing new spins and twists that I simply did not see coming, and eventually, after a wild ride, bringing the series to an emotionally satisfying conclusion.
As to the narration. I admit, I found the performance in Book 1 to be a bit lackluster. But it has improved over the series to the point where I don't even remember what I thought was lacking. In this book, the narrator is truly wonderful, bringing the characters to like.
My only word of warning is this: Do not start with Fix. To enjoy this series, you need to start with Book One and work your way through in the proper order.

The struggle against not-so-charming storybook narratives isn't the only complicating factor in Henrietta "Henry" Marchen's life. As part of the ATI Management Bureau team protecting the world from fairy tales gone awry, she's juggling her unwanted new status as a Snow White, dealing with a potentially dangerous Pied Piper, and wrangling a most troublesome wicked stepsister - along with a budding relationship with Jeff, her teammate.

The Reality of fairy tales
Revisado: 01-23-16
Seanan has done it again. Every book she writes, I love, but the only contestant for books loved quite as much as her Indexing books are her Velveteen books. So when I realized there was going to be a second one, I did a dance of joy. There may have been some squeeing involved.
And this book does, just as the dedication promises, tell us what happens next. Though it has a less episodic feel than Indexing, the overall flavor of the first book carries through into the second one, answering some of the questions left dangling. This is, however, very much a sequel, and not suggested to be read prior to book 1.
Mary Robinette Kowal does her usual stellar job of narrating Seanan's work, bringing life to the different characters and never making you wonder who is talking (even if I do snort a little at the "Nova Scotian" accent... sorry, Mary, I can't help it, and you don't lose points for it)
All in all? A must listen for lovers of fairty tales. Besides, it references one of my favourite childhood tales, even if Disney never animated it until I was in my 30s (and probably gave the ATI Management fits with the changes to the narrative when they did)

Bbetter and better
Revisado: 10-10-15
So. I came into this expecting to like it. After all, I loved Flex, the first book in this series. But I am well aware that sometimes book 2 in a series is a bit lacking.
The Flux? Wasn't. It managed, in fact, to be what I thought it could not be: Actually better than the first one. And that is really saying something.
The story was thrilling, full of unexpected turns, the characters were believable (which is again saying something since a fair few were Mancers). There were even donuts.
I also found the narration improved over the first time through, though I have trouble putting my finger on precisely what made it better. All in all? Well worth a listen. But if you're new to this series, go back and start at book 1, and prepare yourself for a fascinating jaunt into a rarity in modern fantasy: an actually unique magical system.
