Historia
Young, sharp-tongued Paula Masters, used to her cell phones, cherry lattes and designer jeans, suddenly finds herself thrust back in time to 1848 and the Oregon Trail. In modern life, she rebels against the curfews and restrictions of her day, seeing them as unfair hardships. But now in this alien world with its buffalo stampedes, wild Indians, and deadly pestilence, she is about to find out what real hardships are.

Listened to it all in a few days
Revisado: 06-16-21
Paula Masters, the protagonist, was hard to root for at first, but after she arrived on the Oregon Trail and began to change, I was quickly engaged in her entire journey. This story is an ideal gift for the teen who has it all. I’ve enjoyed all of Tom Reppert’s books and Patricia Santomasso’s audio performances of them. A good read after this one is The Captured Girl.

Well Worth Your Time
Revisado: 06-11-21
At first I was unsure about starting a book set during the Holocaust time period, but soon I was fully engaged. The characters are such full personalities and the plot is NOT predictable that I kept listening. The performance was superb and the story satisfying. I highly recommend The Light at Midnight and Tom Reppert’s other books, too. This is his third audio book with voice actor, Patricia Santomasso that I’ve heard. Boy, is she talented. Tom Reppert’s stories are fantastic! I’ll start The Far Journey, next.

Historia
In the dystopian 22nd century, Lauren Ramirez is an Assassin 13, the best at her profession. Betrayed by her employer, the president of the United States, on an off-planet op, she escapes when her spacecraft hurtles through time and crash-lands in 1927 Prohibition Hollywood, with its silent film stars and bootlegging gangsters. She finds herself an alien in an alien land.

Riveting from Start to End
Revisado: 05-26-21
Assassin 13 by Tom Reppert is about a strong woman in the 22nd century who’s catapulted into a harsh life after the brutal deaths of her loved ones. During a space chase scene, she finds herself hurled into the 1920s via a time slip and begins to discover and deal with her demons. Similar to Reppert’s book, The Captured Girl, Assassin 13 features a capable, female protagonist with a cast of friends and foes. At times there are graphic scenes that are truthful, but probably difficult or inappropriate for some audiences to read or to hear (graphic rapes, killings, language). Keep in mind that the author was a special operations Marine. Reppert’s characters are intricate and perfectly human and he weaves his way through plots like a pro. I marvel at how he pegs personality types and character perspectives. At the same time, the reader picks up fascinating details about history that inspire questions like “did that really happen back then” or “was that a real person?” This beckons one to do a Google search to find out more, which adds dimension to the entire experience. Patricia Santomasso is incredibly talented with her varied voices and acting ability. She performed the characters for both Assassin 13 and The Captured Girl. My favorite book so far is Captured Girl, but Assassin 13 is a close second. The ending of Assassin 13 left me wondering how Lauren’s interfering in her mother’s death would alter the heroine’s future and thus the futures of all the other characters. But I liked that the ending is happy with a reunion of sorts. I wanted the daughter to tell the mother who she was and to give some piece of insight, but I accepted that she couldn’t. I also wanted Rollie and Emma to appear as adults and offer some brilliant contribution to life or the plot as adults. Movie Producers, you ought to check out Reppert’s books. I think they’d be great on film! Overall, five stars for books by Reppert and Santomasso!

Historical Fiction at Its Beat!
Revisado: 05-11-21
From the first horrific line until the last hug, this story of a young woman’s survival will keep you tuned in to hear what’s next. Exciting, well-developed characters and an interesting plot keeps the story rolling. I highly recommend it. I wish there was a sequel, but fortunately, Tom Reppert has written other books about strong female leads. The voice actress was very talented, too. Five stars!
