Historia
Betrayed and left for dead, a soldier in 13th-century East Africa winds up in hiding as a monk in Roha (Lalibela). He soon gets romantically entangled with a wealthy heiress as he struggles to maintain his monastic vows. However, when old enemies resurface and threaten those he has come to care for, he secretly picks up the sword again, offering salvation by day with the Bible, but secretly exacting deadly vengeance and justice by night with the sword.

I learned a lot about medieval Ethiopia
Revisado: 11-01-23
The story is pretty simple and straightforward but that's pretty clearly not the point. This story is a vessel for education on Ethiopian history and it does that effectively.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Fantastic Story
Revisado: 12-09-22
This book tells a story of human desperation in the face of an omnicidal threat to Earth. A lot of the science is pretty solid as far as I can tell; however, I will point out that the fact that methane decays into carbon dioxide was overlooked (important for understanding climatic changes due to changing atmospheric composition).

Historia
Real heartbreak is unmistakable. We think of nothing else. We feel nothing else. We care about nothing else. Yet while we wouldn't expect someone to return to daily activities immediately after suffering a broken limb, heartbroken people are expected to function normally in their lives, despite the emotional pain they feel. Now psychologist Guy Winch imagines how different things would be if we paid more attention to this unique emotion - if only we can understand how heartbreak works, we can begin to fix it.

Helped me through a rough time
Revisado: 10-30-22
It's been a difficult year for me and the most recent and most difficult part of that year was telling my friend that I was in love with her (and hearing that she didn't feel similar feelings for me). That was earlier thus week as of the writing of this review.
The outcome of that conversation was what I expected and that conversation itself went far better than I could have hoped in that we were both very open and kind about the situation. So in the wake of that, I didn't want to believe that what I was feeling was heartbreak. While puttering anhedonically around my apartment and occasionally breaking into tears (definitely not heartbroken, right?) I found this book and it helped me admit what I was feeling and give myself to room to deal with it. I mean, maybe. I'll see in a few weeks how I'm doing.

It's surprising that the term "heterosexuality" is less than 150 years old and that heterosexuality's history has never before been written, given how obsessed we are with it. In Straight, independent scholar Hanne Blank delves deep into the contemporary psyche as well as the historical record to chronicle the realm of heterosexual relations - a subject that is anything but straight and narrow.

Enlightening!
Revisado: 07-01-22
This book definitely gives one a lot to think about regarding sex, gender, and culture. I had not previously considered when the concept of heterosexuality originated but it turns out that question leads down one hell of a rabbit hole.

Contains bonus stories
Revisado: 06-28-22
The title of this audiobook would have you believe that it's entire contents are Sir Gowain and the Green Knight. Sir Gowain's story is here but there are also the Tolkien translations of two other medieval English works: Pearl and Sir Orpheo. Pearl is a poem that acts as a vessel for medieval Catholic theology, but also contains a rather colorful description of Heaven as a tiered city (not unlike Minas Tirith, but made out of different types of stone). Sir Orpheo is a medieval anglicization of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. I found both additional works to be enjoyable, if unexpected.
Also, Terry Jones, of course, does a great job reading these works and their introductions.

Historia
Exploring the sometimes hilarious, sometimes devastating impact of crowd behavior and trading trickery on the financial markets, this book brilliantly combines two all-time investment classics. Extraordinary Popular Delusions and Confusión de Confusiones take us from Tulipmania in 1634-when tulips actually traded at a higher price than gold - to the South Sea "bubble" of 1720, and beyond. Securities analyst and author Martin Fridson guides you on a quirky, entertaining, and intriguing journey back through time.

The production isn't bad but this is a selection of part of each work, not the whole piece for either. Decent for getting a feel for what these books are but be careful not to confuse these for the full works.

Ok, but pacing issues
Revisado: 11-30-21
The story is decent enough but it would be better if it were cut down by a third or half. The book had some fun moments but it's too long for what it is.

Historia
A serial murderer known only by a grotesquely apt nickname—Buffalo Bill—is stalking women. He has a purpose, but no one can fathom it, for the bodies are discovered in different states. Clarice Starling, a young trainee at the FBI Academy, is surprised to be summoned by Jack Crawford, chief of the Bureau's Behavioral Science section. Her assignment: to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter—Hannibal the Cannibal—who is kept under close watch in the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane.

Wonderfully Performed
Revisado: 09-14-21
The story is of course good. If you like the movie you'll like the book, but what's great about this production is the performance of the narrator. Frank Muller covers the range of regional accents and idioms present in this book and most importantly plays Hannibal Lecter at least as well as Anthony Hopkins did.

Historia
In the New York Times best-seller Darth Bane: Path of Destruction, Drew Karpyshyn painted a gripping portrait of a young man’s journey from innocence to evil. That man was Darth Bane, a twisted genius whose iron will, fierce ambition, and strength in the dark side of the Force made him a natural leader among the Sith - until his radical embrace of an all-but-forgotten wisdom drove him to destroy his own order...and create it anew from the ashes.

Now I understand the Rule of Two
Revisado: 04-22-21
I never properly understood the Rule of Two until I listened to this book. This book did a good job of establishing the historical context for the Sith Army and for the Rule of Two itself and the reasoning behind its establishment. As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I had enjoyed the movies and a number of the books but had never really delved into the Old Republic content until recently. This book was a good first exposure to some of that content in depth.
