Golf is a Zen sport. If you leave the present moment, you will likely feel the immediate karmic consequences like a hammer hitting your thumb. In The Mindful Golfer: How to Lower Your Handicap While Raising Your Consciousness, Stephen Altschuler helps you nail it all right - hard and true and into another level of surrender, satisfaction, and, self-awareness. He uses the tools of Zen to raise the game several notches on the ladder of consciousness.

A good listen, but longer than it needs to be
Revisado: 02-01-23
There is a lot of good stuff in this book and it's well read, but it's just too long and it gets repetitive in many spots. It reminds me of sitting on the deck after rounds of golf and you have some great discussions, but due to alcohol and perhaps getting older you just keep rehashing the same things. That's fine for golf discussions with your playing partners, but with an Audiobook it's like the group in front of you is playing way too slow. I might have appreciated some of this book more except I've read quite a few golf related books already.

Throughout history, a powerful force has hindered the growth of human welfare and happiness. It is more powerful than the Mafia or the military. It has global catastrophic effects and can be found anywhere from the world's most powerful boardrooms to your local bar. It is human stupidity. Carlo M. Cipolla, noted professor of economic history at the UC Berkeley, created this vitally important book in order to detect and neutralize its threat.

The words are mildly amusing, but the narration brings it down a notch. It's under an hour, still not worth the time.

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

I hoped for more, but it's a start
Revisado: 08-26-20
I was probably expecting too much here given all the 5 star reviews. It's an important topic and there are no easy answers so maybe this book does deserve 5 stars instead of the 3 I gave it. Maybe it's my own white fragility, but I did feel like the author was talking down to me and the narrator's voice made it seem even more so. The author admits that confronting white people about white fragility is incredibly difficult and I feel like she doesn't make it any easier. I give her credit for thoroughly highlighting what white fragility is, but not so much for how to deal with it. I know it's mainly my white fragility that makes me feel defensive even listening to this book, but I also feel the author needed to do a better job at understanding why white people get defensive, how to reach them and how to help them change.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Gladwell continues to inform and entertain
Revisado: 11-13-19
I've been a huge Gladwell fan since reading Blink and Outliers and after listening to Talking to Strangers I'm even more impressed. He continues to provide surprising insights and also proves he can narrate quite well. I really liked how he added in the various soundbites of actual events and also re-created others. It's the first audiobook I can recall that had that and it works well. If you enjoyed his other books then you'll love this one as well. I hope this particular book is his most successful. I think it highlights the fact that we're not quite as smart as we think we are and that there may be more to a story than you realize.

Historia
After years of helping people change, James Fell had a sudden insight about sudden insight: significant life change doesn’t often come from just putting one foot in front of the other, carefully observing and altering habits, slogging through baby steps toward new behavior. Rather, the research reveals that serious life turnaround usually happens in a moment, with a flash of inspiration. Epiphany arrives like a lightning strike, rapidly shifting the recipient of such enlightenment onto a new path that creates a better life.

Thoroughly enjoyable!
Revisado: 10-31-19
This book is a bit long, but James Fell is a good narrator and so you don't really notice. He's engaging and funny while relaying some excellent stories. My one complaint might be that despite the length of the book it doesn't really lay out a good plan for creating your own holy sh!t moments. Yes there's advice in each chapter, but it's always fairly general and not collected in the end.

Not quite what I expected...or wanted
Revisado: 10-21-19
Shame on me, I downloaded this Audible book based solely on it's title and > 4 star rating. I know I should wake up earlier every day, but still struggle to do so and look for tips and inspiration wherever I can. This book certainly has some good insights, but if you've read other motivational self help books then there's nothing really new here. I found the book annoying because the advice and even studies to back it up are couched in a story. I've read that details put into a story format can be easier to digest and remember, but I just didn't care for the story and listening to the narrator voice many characters. The narrator does a good job, but it just didn't work for me and it took 11 hours. Probably just me as I love golf, but when the round goes more than 4.5 hours I start to get annoyed at that as well.

Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Absolutely loved it!
Revisado: 03-05-19
I've always loved Neil Gaiman's books and always had a great interest in mythology, but even so I wasn't sure I would really enjoy this all that much. Quite honestly I wish it was twice as long. There were Norse myths that I hadn't heard of before and the ones I knew are made even better by the author's narration. Neil's voice is perfect for this audiobook and I get the feeling he really enjoyed the process. If you have any interest, just get it and you will not be disappointed.

Good stuff, but long and drawn out
Revisado: 02-15-19
So I think there is a lot of good stuff in this book, but man it seemed a LOT longer than 14 hours. For me it was longer as I constantly found myself drifting off and having to rewind it. I didn't care for the narrator and the book does seem longer than it needs to be. And for as long as it is, I don't think it gives you enough details about HOW to work on becoming supernatural. I was interested enough to keep going and learning more, but I felt like I wasn't getting enough detail.....perhaps I wasn't listening when the details were provided. If you've got 14 hours to kill and laser focus then give this a go. Otherwise maybe head to the Dr's website and cherry pick the details.

Perfect for David Spade fans
Revisado: 02-15-19
If you're not a fan of David Spade, then I'd say skip this. I think he's a funny guy and this Audible book is basically one of his comedy routines stretched out over about 6 hours. It's probably funnier for me as I too am a Polaroid Guy about the same age as David Spade. There are some really funny moments comparing the 70's, 80's and even early 90's to today and there are some kind of boring ones. Some parts are bit raunchy and NSFW, but for the most part it's not too bad....if you're an older guy with a sense of humor. After listening to quite a few serious books about history and self improvement, I just wanted something simple and funny and this book was perfect. Nothing to think long and hard about here, just sit back and laugh.

ABC News anchor Dan Harris used to think that meditation was for people who collect crystals, play Ultimate Frisbee, and use the word namaste without irony. After he had a panic attack on live television, he went on a strange and circuitous journey that ultimately led him to embrace a practice he'd long considered ridiculous. Harris discovered that meditation made him more focused and less yanked around by his emotions. According to his wife, it also made him significantly less annoying.

Another win for Dan Harris
Revisado: 11-08-18
I thoroughly enjoyed Dan's first book so I felt I needed to listen to this one as well. I was not disappointed. As before, there are some great stories and bits of humor thrown in that make it enjoyable. Some Audible books just don't hold my attention...this lack of focus is probably why I should meditate...but I really enjoy the 10% Happier books. If this book contained only meditation tips for fidgety skeptics then it would be pretty dry, but it works because there is some good storytelling behind it and Dan Harris has great voice for audiobooks.
