Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Refreshing Sci Fi
Revisado: 11-13-23
I am generally not a big fan of sci-fi because it is always dreary and bogged down in dystopian nightmares. There's enough of those going on irl. But this is a good balance of humor and a believable conflict. There is a lot of science in it, but not so much an idiot like me couldn't comprehend the story.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Director/Editor needs to do some research
Revisado: 10-13-23
I am in the middle of listening to this, but am moving over to actually reading it. Very difficult to listen to a book with a lot of science information when the narrator mispronounces library as "libary",librarian "libarian", been as "bean", and, gratingly, Jack LaLanne as Jack "LaLan". Every single time. Who let this get by?
I will come back and review the actual book when I finish.

Stakes have never been higher.
Revisado: 07-25-22
This story becomes much darker than the previous books. I won't spoil anything but a wedge has been driven between the characters and wounds need to heal. The entire book is dealing with the ramifications of one bad deal.
The book is a metaphor for depression and change. Characters often feel overwhelmed and wish they could be like their younger selves.
Many new characters in this book. Some that mirror old characters. There is one character that is the titular adversary to Ferideh. She is basically a foil to her and is the opposite to her.
People reading this book as part of the Sundering series without reading the first two books will be disapointed and confused. The sundering is only mentioned in passing in this book and there are several plot threads from the old ones.
I highly enjoyed this book and its longer length. The characters have plenty of room to grow naturally. The Forgotten Realms lore is on point. The only thing is I wish she would name more of Ferideh's spells. But most of the authors like Ed Greenwood who write about magic users don't bog down the game naming spells.
On to book 4!

Historia
Rejected at birth and raised in a village of tiefling misfits, Farideh expects a life without friends, love, or control over her destiny. Then she makes a pact with a devil named Lorcan, and everything changes. Lorcan promises all she ever dreamed of and asks for nothing in return. Her twin sister, Havilar, urges Farideh to resist the devil’s sway. But Farideh’s not so sure. Lorcan may be dangerous but the power he offers is exhilarating. In the ruins of Neverwinter, Farideh’s doubts get tangled up in a devilish snare six layers deep.

Feels like several sessions of D&D
Revisado: 07-13-22
This book hits on multiple d&d tropes throughout the entire story and is broken up into two parts: city and spy intrige and then later basically a hostile dungeon. They also frequently flash back over from other charcters to the hells. Some may find it confusing but I find it reliatively easy to figure out what is happening because of the distinctive names. Multiple characters may be doing random different stuff, and its sometimes unclear what the goal is but if you think of it as a d&d session and the characters are just doing downtime activities like shopping, it makes perfect sense.
You really get a feel for the world in this book. I basically know nothing about the zentarum or harpers but this book shows you a more nuanced not strictly good or evil take on them both. The book really goes deep on dnd lore but you dont have to have known it to enjoy this book. Does it really matter if you don't know selune is godess of the moon? Not really. But the book says it anyway.
Unlike R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt series, the characters in this series has more magical characters. They all have a complicated relationship with magic. Drizzt characters see magic as something useful but not something they can do without items. In this Ferideh covets magic as a force to help her friends, and it gets her into trouble. Dahl, Tam and Bryn all use divine magic and have complicated feelings about it. The characters in this feel more like dnd classes than in other forgotten realms books I've read. Like even down to warlocks, sorcerers and wizards all being different.
Overall I enjoyed this. I also had no problems with the narration as the voices for other characters were good. Ferideh and Havilar's voices were great.

Agatha Christie at her finest
Revisado: 05-09-18
This is Agatha Christie's second novel, written in the 1920s. I love that there is a sort of innocence and naivete in the characters and in the story. Although I guessed who the secret adversary was, I still enjoyed guessing who the devious and mysterious Mr. Brown was. I am sure if I was alive in the 1920s and read it then, this would seem like a novel new form of literature and would have been impossible to guess what was going on. My only criticism is that the narrator's American accent was way off...sounded more Irish to me. But I am sure when American's do British accents they feel the same way. I am amazed at how the younger generations of British actors pull off the American accent these days.

The True Underbelly of High Society
Revisado: 07-06-17
I liked this book very much, especially growing up seeing Truman Capote on television. It brings him out of the two-dimensional, caricature of a man that lives in my mind. The tragedy of trying to find love and fulfillment in the world of great wealth and power, to find that it is as cold as Alaska in January. I like Paul Boehmer's narration, but was not a fan of Cassandra Campbell's. Truman Capote had such a distinctive voice and cadence that I feel more study of it for her would have been beneficial. Or someone who had a better imitative ability. It doesn't have to be perfect, but was having a very difficult time visualizing Truman Capote, when she did his voice.

I found myself tuning out sometimes in this book because of I would forget who the minor characters were. Part of this was because I would take long pauses between listening. But the story of the main characters and the mystery of how they intertwine was suspenseful and entertaining.

Three strangers who are trying to find their ways in the wake of loss become entwined in fraudulent schemes, which have a resounding impact on them all. One is a college student who hops a bus to break loose from his abstract and tenuous existence. Another is a man searching for his troubled twin brother, who has been missing for ten years. And another is a naïve, young woman who sneaks away from her small town with her former history teacher. Their three lives interconnect in unforeseen ways—and with unexpected consequences.

More interested in Sarah's story than Julia's
Revisado: 06-08-12
It took me awhile to get used to a woman reader. I felt she didn't have a enough drama in her voice. And, for some strange reason, when she read the men's parts I just couldn't find it believable. Yet, when I hear a man read a woman's part, I don't have a problem with that.
I found the myself interested in Sarah's story, but not Julia's, so I was bored whenever she was narrating. And disappointed in the result of Sarah's story.
