This is the third book by James Hornfischer I've listened to on Audible, behind Neptune's Inferno and Fleet at Flood Tide. Tin Can Sailors is just as good, and I burned through it quickly due to its gripping narrative. The author puts exquisite detail where it's needed, but doesn't bog down the story with minutia. I would recommend this book to readers with any level of military history, experts and dabblers both will enjoy this book.

A very easy listen that kept my attention non-stop. So many parts of this extraordinary man's career will seem relatable to almost everyone.

An interesting telling of the CIA from it's early beginnings. Well written, but the amateur won't get much from it. This book is best enjoyed by someone with a good grasp of cold War and GWOT history.

I highly recommend listening to this book with Google earth pulled up to follow along with the troop movements, it really puts into scale just how incredibly tough these men were. loved the book and narration.

I saw a few reviews which called this book "propaganda", which is absurd. This is the memoir of a man who was completely devoted to his unit, his comrades, and his homeland. The author does an excellent job conveying the intensity of the conflict they faced, and at times my gut wrenched thinking of the suffering he and his men endured. I think any veteran who has felt the bonds that only combat can forge will appreciate this memoir much more than most other war novels.

Not flooded with the usual "we were invincible" bravado of modern war memoirs, this is a very grounded and compelling story about a young, inexperienced Lieutenant who grows into an impressive leader. I liked it.

I bought this book immediately after finishing "Neptune's Inferno" also by Hornfisher because that was such an excellent read, this one exceeds it. What I love most about this book is how it can tell personal stories of great variety, from Admirals to fighter pilots to Japanese soldiers to Civilians, while seamlessly telling the greater story of these final years of the pacific war. I burned through this book as fast as I could. Even someone with an extensive knowledge of the Pacific war has a lot to learn from this captivating book.

Robertson Dean is one of my favorite narrators, and this superb book is enhanced by his reading. Neptune's Inferno is bristling with detail, grit and emotion. It contains a variety of sources and anecdotes which provides a fine balance between statistic and memoir.
