Historia
Growing up in an affluent suburb of New York City, 16-year-old Nevaeh Levitz never thought much about her biracial roots. When her Black mom and Jewish dad split up, she relocates to her mom's family home in Harlem and is forced to confront her identity for the first time. Nevaeh wants to get to know her extended family, but because she inadvertently passes as white, her cousin thinks she's too privileged, pampered, and selfish to relate to the injustices African Americans face on a daily basis.

what a beautiful rollercoaster coming of age story
Revisado: 11-12-20
I LOVED this book . I really appreciate that the author made a note at the end to show us that though this book is fiction, events and situations Naveh and her family were a part of are very, very real. I was so emotionally invested in this story and I really appreciated every character in this book, except Abby. Abby is a horrible character, but she's also not a unbelievable person see or hear about in real life. I wasn't sure about the narrator, I have heard her read Viva Durant, which I liked, but I felt her voice was older than what you'd expect to hear for Naveh. That's the only negative thing I have to say.
there are definitely a few plot holes that leave me wanting something more from this story, like what happens with Jesus and Naveh's school? It's an important scene in the book but it gets lost in Naveh's narration, I feel like we needed a little more here.
thank you Natasha Diaz for writing this book and for the Author note at the end. it's helping me, a half mexican half white, woman, realize that, I need to be better, for me, and for those not like me or who have had my privilege.

Historia
The Jazz Age is in full swing, but Casiopea Tun is too busy cleaning the floors of her wealthy grandfather’s house to listen to any fast tunes. Nevertheless, she dreams of a life far from her dusty small town in southern Mexico. A life she can call her own. Yet this new life seems as distant as the stars, until the day she finds a curious wooden box in her grandfather’s room. She opens it - and accidentally frees the spirit of the Mayan god of death, who requests her help in recovering his throne from his treacherous brother.

great story, didn't expect the narrator
Revisado: 09-04-20
I really enjoyed this book, it's a different kind of fairy tale, and the ending wasn't what I expected, but I really did like it!
The e narration wasn't my favorite though. I expected Cassiopeia to sound less American. I appreciate they'd the narrator is latino and properly pronounces Spanish words, but I wanted something more. I also can't tell of it was the narrator or the sound set-up but some parts of sentences were spoken REALLY low, and it didn't make sense as to why. so, for me that means this is a 4⭐vs 5.
