Nothing ordinary about this incredible story
Revisado: 07-04-24
From start to finish this book is deeply engrossing, interesting, inspiring, thoughtful, stimulating and moving. It is written and narrated beautifully and, given the subject matter even heroically. I haven’t experienced loss like the author has (other than the solace I used to feel from the mountains of the west) but I imagine this book would be helpful for those who have.

Few writers today have reshaped our view of the ancient Greek myths more than revered bestselling author Natalie Haynes. Divine Might is a female-centered look at Olympus and the Furies, focusing on the goddesses whose prowess, passions, jealousies, and desires rival those of their male kin.

Engrossing
Revisado: 06-02-24
At the end, Natalie states that she wrote this book as fast as she could, and I believe I listened to it just as quickly! I admit I might listen just for her delivery, I LOVE her voice, but in fact, the content is truly engrossing. I love that in addition to her insightful and amusing commentary, she recounts these ancient stories that I never seem to tire of. I just finished the book and think I shall go back to the beginning and listen again! (Unexpected snake sex 😂)

Historia
Troy has fallen and the victorious Greeks are eager to return home with the spoils of an endless war—including the women of Troy themselves. They await a fair wind for the Aegean. It does not come, because the gods are offended. The body of King Priam lies unburied and desecrated, and so the victors remain in suspension, camped in the shadows of the city they destroyed as the coalition that held them together begins to unravel. Old feuds resurface and new suspicions and rivalries begin to fester.

Exquisite
Revisado: 03-25-23
This is my second audible book by Pat Barker. I’ve enjoyed them both immensely and look forward to more. Her writing is beautiful and at times positively poetic. She brings every detail of every landscape to living, breathing life: internal, inter-personal and external. And given the subject matter, that is really remarkable. I highly recommend.

Historia
As a botanist and professor of plant ecology, Robin Wall Kimmerer has spent a career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers.

Profound Medicine
Revisado: 03-04-21
This is perhaps the most beautiful book I have ever read or in this case to listened to. Kimmerer’s writing is exquisite and her narration a balm to my senses. The stories and wisdom she imparts are true medicine but goes down as sweetly as the scent of honeysuckle on a warm spring breeze. My wish is that Everyone read this book. Buy it, gift it, savor and treasure it. I took one star off for one reason: there is not even a pause between chapters which I find disconcerting and confusing. One needs at least a moment of quiet at the end of each essay to take a breath and let its power sink in. This is not a book to be rushed.

Historia
From the hero whistleblower of the infamous Theranos scam, Thicker than Water is a look at never-before-revealed details behind closed doors at the company, revealing a cautionary tale of corporate bullying, gaslighting, ego, and wealth running amok in Silicon Valley. Tyler Shultz had been in the workforce for less than a year when he emailed Elizabeth Holmes, his employer and the CEO and founder of Theranos, with concerns that the company’s lab practices were faulty, ignored quality control, and were potentially dangerous to patients.

Could not stop listening
Revisado: 10-19-20
This is a fascinating story told with candor, clarity and compassion. A unique opportunity to glimpse up close and very personal some very dark aspects of human nature, corporate corruption and greed, the failings of America’s politicians and justice system and yet also human nobility at its best and most tenacious and how the justice system can succeed (although Elizabeth and Sonny should have gone to jail). This is the second AO I’ve listened to and they are both my favorite listens so far. Great work AO!

Historia
In layered prose and with thoughtful, accessible scholarship, Aslan narrates the history of religion as one long and remarkably cohesive attempt to understand the divine by giving it human traits and emotions. According to Aslan, this innate desire to humanize God is hardwired in our brains, making it a central feature of nearly every religious tradition. As Aslan writes, "Whether we are aware of it or not, and regardless if we are believers or not, what the vast majority of us think about when we think about God is a divine version of ourselves."

Everyone Should Read This Book!
Revisado: 05-18-19
When I was about 5 years old I asked my Grandmother if there was a god. We were sitting on the couch in my parents upper west side apartment. She said simply “God is in all things”. I looked around the room. I saw pillows on the couch. I saw the couch. I saw the TV set. I saw the kitchen table. And I thought, God is in all of these things, and that made perfect sense to me. I was satisfied with that answer and half a century later, I remain satisfied with that answer. What I was not satisfied with was the rest of humanity’s mishugas. This book thoroughly fleshes out the wise origins of my Grandmother’s statement as well as all the mishugas that still plagues the human race. It is fascinating, erudite, very well narrated, and vitally important to understanding who we are, where we came from and where we are going- for better or for worse.

Ancient and Timely
Revisado: 04-10-19
Madeline Miller is like Circe herself. She weaves a tale so powerful it often brought me to tears; so transformational it would seem it has given form to what lies in my heart. This is an ancient tale that in Miller’s adept hands, becomes enormously relevant and revealing. Ancient, timeless and timely. On the brink of planetary demise there has never been a better time to contemplate hubris and folly and The value of impermanence.

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Insightful, profound, moving, and entertaining. Offers everyone a deeply personal experience of what Chris Hayes calls “The Colony” within our nation. A must read for anyone interested in understanding the phenomenon of racism in America and wanting to enjoy a uniquely African-American tale. First novel- bravo!!
