Historia
In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

A Loves Story
Revisado: 03-29-24
I haven't read Ann Pachett in many years. I'm glad I chose this one. It is the story of a family, and particularly the relationship between a mother and her grown daughters and the unresolved story of their mother's earlier career as an actress, in the theater, and as the farm wife in New Hampshire that she has been during their lives. Those relationships, and Laura's with her husband, their difficulties, and their resolutions, are so true in the way they are portrayed; I felt I knew these people.
That Meryl Streep narrated, for me, she was the perfect person. I could just imagine her reading the book, having memories from her own career arise.

Richard Osman does it again
Revisado: 11-21-23
Number 4 in the series, I wasn't so keen on the opening chapters. Knowing what I have loved about his other books kept me going, and yes, I basically couldn't put it down. As a mystery, the twist and turns are welcomed, his characters, with their human flaws, keep it real and relatable, the humor, enjoyable, and the writing, well there is some mighty good writing in there too. Thanks also, to the narrator, Fiona Shaw. She is just right to catch it all, both male and female voices and characters. Also, with thanks to Audible for the extra of one-to-one interviews at the end.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Categorizing?
Revisado: 10-07-23
When I recommend this book, which I began doing before I was halfway through it, The first thing I am asked is, "What category would you put this book in?" with a big smile I reply, "Everything!" It has comedy, it has drama, there is sadness. The main character is a Chemist who is female. It is adventurous. it begins in the early 50's and runs through the early 60's. If you are a seasoned citizen, you will recognize the situations and characters. if you younger you will be educated. I cannot say more because I wouldn't want to spoil it for anyone. It is Excellent!

Historia
'Between the Stops is a sort of a memoir, my sort. It's about a bus trip really, because it's my view from the Number 12 bus (mostly top deck, the seat at the front on the right), a double-decker that plies its way from Dulwich, in South East London, where I was living, to where I sometimes work - at the BBC, in the heart of the capital. It's not a sensible way to write a memoir at all, probably, but it's the way things pop into your head as you travel, so it's my way'.

Really Enjoyed this Book
Revisado: 01-02-23
I don't know where I, a Yankee, became aware of Sandi, maybe it was "The British Baking Show". What I do know was somehow I began following her YouTube videos during the COVID lockdown, and I just loved them! I was so disappointed when the world began open up and she needed to stop doing them. Each time she would pick a book to discuss and that was just a base. The show could be about the book, about the geographical area or historic times it took place in. It could be about the characters or about the sociology of the times. Always a great deal of work on her part, and always interesting. All of that to say, this book is organized in much the same way only she follows a favorite bus route and studies the people and places and times generated by that trip. I am so grateful she wrote it and spoke the words and I hope she will write more books in the future. Note: I just discovered that You can also listen to the podcasts, " We will get past This" on Audible... I am listening to all of them again.

Historia
The definitive biography of Edward Gorey, the eccentric master of macabre nonsense. From The Gashlycrumb Tinies to The Doubtful Guest, Edward Gorey's wickedly funny and deliciously sinister little books have influenced our culture in innumerable ways, from the works of Tim Burton and Neil Gaiman to Lemony Snicket. Some even call him the Grandfather of Goth. An eccentric, a gregarious recluse, an enigmatic auteur of whimsically morbid masterpieces, yes - but who was the real Edward Gorey behind the Oscar Wildean pose?

Appreciated the Biography
Revisado: 09-12-22
Admittedly a difficult person on whom to collect information, Mark Dery has done an excellent job of seeking it out. I also bought the book, which I will pass on, so I could see some of the drawing he was writing about. It's a long book and I'm glad to have done that - the font in the book is so tiny I would have given up! I came away with a greater picture of the man (as much as anyone might be able) behind the Art.
I was a little bored with the narrator. I felt his tone was a bit newscaster-ish. That being said, I'm also not exactly sure how this biography should be read.

Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as "human computers" used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets and astronauts into space. Among these problem solvers were a group of exceptionally talented African American women, some of the brightest minds of their generation.

If You Loved the Movie...
Revisado: 09-18-21
If you loved the movie, there's more meat here. As the biographer, Ms Shetterly, writes in the Epilogue, the question she gets asked the most is. "Where have all these stories been?" So many more black female and other female engineers and mathematicians had their work lives effected by their times and the barriers they needed to overcome. The The famous and more than the most famous are presented here. I liked the straight-forward performance.
I would only say to Ms Miles, the narrator, slow down a little. That would allow me to digest the words and situations more easily.
