Historia
In Washington: A Life celebrated biographer Ron Chernow provides a richly nuanced portrait of the father of our nation. This crisply paced narrative carries the reader through his troubled boyhood, his precocious feats in the French and Indian War, his creation of Mount Vernon, his heroic exploits with the Continental Army, his presiding over the Constitutional Convention, and his magnificent performance as America's first president.

George Washington: a man greater than kings.
Revisado: 06-17-22
Chernow’s historic novel depicts a man who, though imperfect in human ways, was nonetheless perfect for his role in bringing about the American states’ unity and their evolution into a nation like no other. Open about his failings and vanities, but ebullient about his strengths and leadership, the story plays out in emotional highs and lows of both the man and the nation struggling under his aegis.
Altogether, a very entertaining and satisfying read.

Historia
It was on the Silk Roads that East and West first encountered each other through trade and conquest, leading to the spread of ideas, cultures, and religions, and it was the appetites for foreign goods that drove economies and the growth of nations. From the first cities in Mesopotamia to the emergence of Greece and Rome to the depredations by the Mongols, the transmission of the Black Death, the struggles of the Great Game, and the fall of Communism - the fate of the West has always been inextricably linked to the East.

THE SILK ROADS is a good look at the history of the world; I recommend it.
Revisado: 03-06-20
Frankopan’s world history takes a look at human history through ancient, middle age, and modern times. I advise the reader to obtain a good world map for reference throughout the book, unless you have a good background in world geography.
The author’s emphasis on middle eastern culture is a strong point in the presentation of the dynamics of interactions between the world of Islam and Western society. That same strength, however, manifests itself as a sort of bias when he describes the spread of Islam by military conquest as a sign of genius; whereas Western armies marching under the flags of Christian nations are viewed as a form of grossest hypocrisy. That aside, the book is truly a worthwhile reading adventure.
This narration left something to be desired. Frequently, sentences were prematurely ended by inflection; then remaining fragment added on, distracting from the narrative experience.

Historia
Jack Gantos' rocket-paced follow-up to the Newbery Medal–winning novel Dead End in Norvelt opens in the 1960s, deep in the shadow of the Cold War and the Cuban missile crisis. But instead of Russian warheads, other kinds of trouble are raining down on young Jack Gantos and his utopian town of Norvelt in western Pennsylvania. After an explosion, a new crime by an old murderer, and the sad passing of the town's founder, twelve-year-old Jack will soon find himself launched on a mission that takes him hundreds of miles away.

Historia
The Chuzzlewits are a family divided by money and selfishness; even young Martin, the eponymous hero, is arrogant and self-centred. He offends his grandfather by falling in love with the latter’s ward, Mary, and sets out to make his own fortune in life, travelling as far as America - which produces from Dickens a savage satire on a new world tainted with the vices of the old. Martin’s nature slowly changes through his bitter experience of life and his enduring love for Mary.

Historia
In this stunning novel, Gerald Blumenthal explores the mind of a serial killer and the subsequent court room dramas that follow. Like his previous award-winning novel The Brass Compass (now being adapted to the big screen), The Monkey Trial is fact-based but is fictionalized to avoid another court drama! The novel begs the question: what happens if a man chosen by society to judge others in society commits heinous crimes?

Fabulous story of a real life hero.
Revisado: 07-20-16
An exciting telling of the life of General Alex Dumas, father of author Alexandre Dumas. Heroism, honor betrayed, battlefield genius, and true love: it's all here. Add to that a man who excels in so many ways in spite of racial injustice. Read it. You'll be glad you did.
