Historia
Pulled out of (forced) retirement by his old protégé, Peter Guillam, George Smiley must determine who among the high command at the British Secret Intelligence Service is in fact a Soviet spy—one who’s been climbing their way up the ranks for decades. The stakes are high: the mole is behind more than one failed operation and has lain waste to some of their best informant networks.

Returning because of the narration
Revisado: 11-28-24
Narration makes or breaks an audio book. In the reviews for this book, one person said this person could read the phone book (or something like that) and it would be interesting. I have found the exact opposite. I cannot remember characters no keep track of who is talking. Somehow this person makes all dialog sound like it's coming from the same person. this is in contrast to so many other narrators. I am halfway through chapter 4 and have been paying attention at the same level as I pay attention to all audio books and I do not have a clue what is going on.
So I am trying to figure out how to return it now
I know this is a well renowned book so i gave it 5 stars for story though I don't know the story.

Historia
Few novels have had as profound an impact on American culture as On the Road. Pulsating with the rhythms of 1950s underground America, jazz, sex, illicit drugs, and the mystery and promise of the open road, Kerouac’s classic novel of freedom and longing defined what it meant to be “beat” and has inspired generations of writers, musicians, artists, poets, and seekers who cite their discovery of the book as the event that “set them free”.

I've listened about 6 times since I bought it
Revisado: 05-09-22
I love this book so hard. I'd always heard about Neal Cassady in Dead songs, in fables told by famous people. I've discovered that imo he caused a lot of pain in a lot of women due to his self indulgence that he couldn't control and that was terrible. But he was unique in sucking the marrow and enjoyment out of life for those same reasons so I'm really torn.
That said, Will Patton is an amazing reader - better than Kerouac himself on the Steve Allen show. I can't imagine it being read in a way that better conveys Dean Moriarty's excitement, and Sal Paradise's sadness. Old Bull Lee (WS Burroughs) is also fabulous! So great - the whole thing

Very hard to pay attention
Revisado: 03-12-22
I listened to Jon Krakauer's book and wanted to listen to this one to get all sides of rust happened.
The former was exciting and well read, well written.
This book is not well performed at all. Pauses are at awkward places in the sentence, there is lack of continuity in reading when the words clearly say it's all one thought, etc.
It's hard to tell the quality of the writing and story but the writing does seem very fact based, with short unexpressive sentences

Historia
F. Scott Fitzgerald makes antebellum Baltimore his setting for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a fantastical tale with some Poe-like overtones about a baby born at age 70 who then lives life in reverse, his hair turning "in the dozen years of his life from white to iron-gray, the network of wrinkles on his face becoming less pronounced". What ramifications that creates for Benjamin's relationship with his father first and then later with his wife and his own son makes for some fantastical situations.

Funny dialog, short, worth a listen
Revisado: 02-11-22
It's very short, the situations and dialog throughout were well thought out, riding a line between the ridiculous, and credible reactions to such. Funny dialog

The master at his scarifying best! From heart-pounding terror to the eeriest of whimsy - tales from the outer limits of one of the greatest imaginations of our time! Trucks that punish and beautiful teen demons who seduce a young man to massacre; curses whose malevolence grows through the years; obscene presences and angels of grace - here, indeed, is a night-blooming bouquet of chills and thrills.

cutting room floor material
Revisado: 10-14-21
I recently listened to Dr Sleep, liked it. So I thought I'd try some other works. This has a lot of stories, multiple narrators I've heard of, so I tried it.
The first story was okay - the mist.
After that, it seems like a lot a trivial dialog with no actual story. Also, terrible New England accents abound.
I mean, there is just too much dialog and things like how Mainers give directions, etc. That really needs 5 minutes of narrative?

Historia
In this 1962 novel, Kerouac's alter ego, Jack Duluoz, overwhelmed by success and excess, gravitates back and forth between wild binges in San Francisco and an isolated cabin on the California coast where he attempts to renew his spirit and clear his head of madness and alcohol. Only nature seems to restore him to a sense of balance. In the words of Allen Ginsberg, Big Sur "reveals consciousness in all its syntactic elaboration, detailing the luminous emptiness of his own paranoiac confusion".

Angry story or angry narration - I can't tell
Revisado: 08-15-21
The latter two thirds of the audio book is read with gritted teeth. it may be warranted, not sure. Not relaxing, not interesting - just angry internal dialog over petty matters, discontent with life, and lashing out by Kerouac at other characters.
This was touted as a continuing journey but it's just angry reflection. Maybe it's valuable as an insight into Kerouac, but not as a story on it's own imo.
I'm on chapter 35 of 38, can't wait to be done

Historia
“The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line,” writes Du Bois, in one of the most prophetic works in all of American literature. First published in 1903, this collection of 15 essays dared to describe the racism that prevailed at that time in America—and to demand an end to it. Du Bois’ writing draws on his early experiences, from teaching in the hills of Tennessee, to the death of his infant son, to his historic break with the conciliatory position of Booker T. Washington.

important work, hard to absorb the narration 4 me
Revisado: 05-23-21
I find it hard not to zone out while listening. So much effort seems dedicated to enunciation that the feelings and meanings of the sentences are not conveyed. I'm not sure. But I really have to concentrate to absorb what's said here, rather than it being like listening to a friend relay the same words
