Historia
A work of striking originality, The Human Condition is in many respects more relevant now than when it first appeared in 1958. In her study of the state of modern humanity, Hannah Arendt considers humankind from the perspective of the actions of which it is capable. The problems Arendt identified then - diminishing human agency and political freedom, the paradox that as human powers increase through technological and humanistic inquiry, we are less equipped to control the consequences of our actions - continue to confront us today.

Historia
In her new audiobook, Invisible Women, award-winning campaigner and writer Caroline Criado Perez shows us how, in a world largely built for and by men, we are systematically ignoring half the population. She exposes the gender data gap - a gap in our knowledge that is at the root of perpetual, systemic discrimination against women and that has created a pervasive but invisible bias with a profound effect on women’s lives.

Eye opener
Revisado: 01-20-21
50% of the population has been systematically neglected. If we want a better world, we need to make it better for women.
I learned a lot with this broad display of statistics but much more by the deep insights of the author whom is capable of seeing beyond the absence of dissagregated data on women.

Historia
Travelers often become enchanted with the first country that captures their hearts and gives them license to be free. For Wade Davis, it was Colombia. Now in a masterly new book, Davis tells of his travels on the mighty Magdalena, the river that made possible the nation. Along the way, he finds a people who have overcome years of conflict precisely because of their character, informed by an enduring spirit of place, and a deep love of a land that is home to the greatest ecological and geographical diversity on the planet.

A must read for colombians
Revisado: 01-12-21
I enjoyed a lot listening to Wade Davis. Being.a colombian myself the story telled in this audiobook has helped me connect many dots as the river Magdalena has ports. It is true we have our backs facing the river and realizing this brought me to tears many times while walking and listening how for decades we have turn this artery of the country in our flowing graveyard.
Realizing we are an anfibian culture is something I will keep from this reading. This is a reminder of an idea developed early on by Orlando Fals Borda, founder of sociolocy as an academic career at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. It is an idea that hopefully not comes too late in my career as a teacher. I intend to spread this meme on to my students.
Wade Davis' profound love for Colombia is felt in every sentence in this book. We colombians need to feel it too in order to give the river, and therefore the country, a chance

Historia

Conventional wisdom suggests there is a sharp distinction between emotion and reason. Emotions are seen as inferior, disruptive, primitive, and even bestial forces. These 24 remarkable lectures suggest otherwise-that emotions have intelligence and provide personal strategies that are vitally important to our everyday lives of perceiving, evaluating, appraising, understanding, and acting in the world.

Historia
In The Sense of Style, the best-selling linguist and cognitive scientist Steven Pinker answers these questions and more. Rethinking the usage guide for the 21st century, Pinker doesn’t carp about the decline of language or recycle pet peeves from the rulebooks of a century ago. Instead, he applies insights from the sciences of language and mind to the challenge of crafting clear, coherent, and stylish prose.

These 24 lectures are a vibrant introduction to the primary characters and most important stories of classical Greek and Roman mythology. Among those you'll investigate are the accounts of the creation of the world in Hesiod's Theogony and Ovid's Metamorphoses; the gods Zeus, Apollo, Demeter, Persephone, Hermes, Dionysos, and Aphrodite; the Greek heroes, Theseus and Heracles (Hercules in the Roman version); and the most famous of all classical myths, the Trojan War.

Historia
Jeff Speck has dedicated his career to determining what makes cities thrive. And he has boiled it down to one key factor: walkability. The very idea of a modern metropolis evokes visions of bustling sidewalks, vital mass transit, and a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly urban core. But in the typical American city, the car is still king, and downtown is a place that’s easy to drive to but often not worth arriving at. Making walkability happen is relatively easy and cheap; seeing exactly what needs to be done is the trick.

Great companion for a walk
Revisado: 04-21-16
I work in wayfinding and environmental graphics. Understanding better the notion of walkability has given me a bigger picture of the problem. I guess it is easy to become one of the specialists Speck critizes, but the arguments actually tend to enforce wayfinding decisions. In other words it has helped me get a sense of the subtle structure and hidden logics of the urban fabric
