Historia
Lindisfarne, AD 793. There had been portents - famine, whirlwinds, lightning from clear skies, serpents seen flying through the air. But when the raiders came, no one was prepared. They came from the North, their dragon-prowed longships gliding out of the dawn mist as they descended on the kingdom's most sacred site. It is 8th June AD 793, and with the pillage of the monastery on Lindisfarne, the Viking Age has begun. While his fellow monks flee before the Norse onslaught, one young novice stands his ground.

Great Storytelling!
Revisado: 07-27-21
It started out slow but still managed to keep my interest I guess because of the solid writing thru out. Good character development and plot lines. Now I'm waiting for the next installment.

It took a while to get used to the first person narrative but the story line and narrator were excellent. Lots of action just like the title suggests.

This is the first series of books I've read from this author and I was very impressed. Well written, lots of action and never boring. I'm looking for more to read from him. Also the narrator was a master of entertainment and contributed greatly to the enjoyment of the books. Hugely recommended!

This was my first read from this author and I found myself searching for more books from him upon immediately finishing this audiobook. Briefly, there is plenty of action with an entertaining storyline. Well worth the audio experience which was enhanced by the narrator. I hope the saga continues.

Historia
Against the background of an age that saw the rebirth of ancient and classical learning, Paul Strathern explores the intensely dramatic rise and fall of the Medici family in Florence as well as the Italian Renaissance, which they did so much to sponsor and encourage. Interwoven into the narrative are the lives of many of the great Renaissance artists with whom the Medici had dealings, including Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Donatello as well as scientists like Galileo and Pico della Mirandola.

FASCINATING!
Revisado: 02-24-19
From the very opening, the narration and story is compelling and gripping. The attempted assassination of Lorenzo the Magnificent is the perfect hook to get the reader interested. Masterfully researched and retold like a bestseller. If history would have been portrayed this way in school, I probably would be a lot smarter!

The Series is Spent!<br />
Revisado: 02-22-19
I have previously given Scarrow high marks for the Cato/Macro series of books but this last one complete with Cato's tortured pseudoethical machinations regarding punishing his own soldiers for defending themselves but no such machinations for the massacre and torture of a unit of Romans is frustratingly comical though clearly put forth as serious writing. Finally, Scarrow's inept understanding of the "similarities" between the Roman usurpation of Armenia and Vietnam conflict are simply hysterical. By far the worst book of the series.

Narrator Was Terrible!
Revisado: 09-16-18
This very decent book was a handicapped terribly by a docudrama
type narration from an old Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom TV show. Talk about Marlin Perkins on life support. It's as if it was recorded off the 1st attempt with no stopping. Dull and boring and monotone. Otherwise, a good story.
