I am so glad to find this series. I have been disappointed recently with other period mystery series. I was not able to like the characters or appreciate their plight. This one hit the mark. I am disappointed that book 3 and 4 are not available. I hope that changes soon.
Ps., SO glad they switched narrators!

Historia
The Earl of Wrexford possesses a brilliant scientific mind, but boredom and pride lead him to reckless behavior. He does not suffer fools gladly. So when pompous, pious Reverend Josiah Holworthy publicly condemns him for debauchery, Wrexford unsheathes his rapier-sharp wit and strikes back. As their war of words escalates, London's most popular satirical cartoonist, A. J. Quill, skewers them both.

I wanted to like it
Revisado: 09-25-23
On "paper", this book has everything I love, but I just couldn't get into it. I can't put my finger on exactly why. All I can think of is I did not find the main character, a member of the British upper crust bucking the stereotype and trying to solve crimes, interesting. The female counterpart was more interesting, character-wise. She was the only character I liked and wanted to know more about.

Hoped to like it more
Revisado: 09-07-23
I loved Archer's Glass and Steele series, and I was hoping for similar, with a different twist, this wasn't it.
The period of time (Elizabethian London) the story was supposed to set in was merely an afterthought. There weren't any period-specific details only to mention the queen and her secretary several times. It didn't play into the story very well.
Isabelle is supposed to be a witch. You don't really hear anything about this until halfway through the book. Even then, it's underwhelming. I was hoping more of her magical skills would be explained or used, there were several "action" scenes when it could have been added to spice it up.
The author decided to add lurid sex scenes to this story. Again, there wasn't any need for it. I feel like authors or publishers these days are just adding gratuitous sex speak because they think that's what readers want. They need to make the story better, not just add "throbbing erection" or "pink nipples" into a bland story expecting to make it better. It's lazy.

Historia
Barbara Butcher was early in her recovery from alcoholism when she found an unexpected lifeline: a job at the Medical Examiner’s Office in New York City. The second woman ever hired for the role of Death Investigator in Manhattan, she was the first to last more than three months. The work was gritty, demanding, morbid, and sometimes dangerous—and she loved it. In What the Dead Know, she writes with the kind of New York attitude and bravado you might expect from decades in the field, investigating more than 5,500 death scenes, 680 of which were homicides.

I wished there was more!
Revisado: 08-15-23
Barbara is a great storyteller and has led a very interesting life. I have a feeling she's probably one of those people we all know that you say constantly, "You ought to write a book!" There was a lot more to this book than I anticipated. I really thought it was only going to be a memoir about death investigators. In and of itself would be cool, but there was much more. HIghly recommend!

It's ok, a bit predictable
Revisado: 04-03-23
I got the three book set because of the high rating. I prefer book series because I like character development. I wasn't wowed by the story. I had hoped for more. It wasn't very intriguing or original. I will still listen to the other two in the series because they are easy to listen to, but I can't recommend them to mystery listeners.

Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal. When one such creature threatens an independent tutor, Harry Dresden must shake off the blood and dirt of his most recent battles and rise to the occasion, even when it turns out that the new predator is far more dangerous and connected than first appearances would suggest.

Great short story and read by Butcher too!
Revisado: 07-20-22
I have been jonesing for a good Dresden file substitute since the last book was released. Unfortunately, I haven't found any I like as much. Getting this little fix was great. I do miss James Marsters's reading, but Jim Butcher was awesome. I don't think anyone would be disappointed if he decided to narrate again.
