I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Interesting and thought provoking. I found the author’s analysis mixed in with her personal experiences a strong combination

Historia
Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandment finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading. Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now, what began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, becomes something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future. Except the discovery of their bond would mean the death of each of them. There’s still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win. That’s how war works, right?

An epistolary novel with a very cool sci-fi premise
Revisado: 02-13-24
I loved this book and will definitely pick it up again. However I recognize that it is not for everyone. If you like a “hard magic system” or really deep explanations on how the science is supposed to work, this is not for you. If you don’t like lyrical prose this is also not for you. However, the experimental aspects of the novel (novella?) really worked for me. I really enjoyed the plot twist at the end and it made me want to go back and relisten to see it all from a new angle. This is marketed as a sapphic novel but it is in fact a novel of two cyborg-ish superhumans who happen to have she/her pronouns. This neither bothered me nor added to my (great) enjoyment of the story. I thought it was a bit misleading marketing though, as some people might go in hoping for a true sapphic story and that’s not really it. All in all a great story and would highly recommend it (with the caveats above)

Historia
Vampires have come to Lancre, but they're not what you'd expect. Sure, they drink blood and view humans as dinner, but they're modern and sophisticated. They've got style and fancy waistcoats. And they're not a bit afraid of garlic. The Magpyr family are out of the casket and want a bite of the future. But they haven't met the neighbours yet. Between them and Lancre stand a coven of four - Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, Magrat and young Agnes - and they don't take kindly to murderous intruders....

Historia
In the late 1890s, Edmund Dene Morel, a young British shipping company agent, noticed something strange about the cargoes of his company's ships as they arrived from and departed for the Congo. Incoming ships were crammed with valuable ivory and rubber. Outbound ships carried little more than soldiers and firearms. Correctly concluding that only slave labor could account for these cargoes, Morel almost singlehandedly made this slave-labor regime the premier human rights story in the world.

Great book, great performance, some editing issues
Revisado: 11-29-23
Many contemporary readers look at the DRC and wonder how things ended up that way. The author conveys the magnitude and the horror of the slave trade while giving voice to those who history has often ignored. The narration is great and he conveys the sometimes awful descriptions (in the nature not in the writing). I particularly enjoyed the exploration of the topic of exploring the so called “Dark Continent” and how brutal that process was, and how it was linked to the subsequent colonization.
One drawback to this audiobook is that the editing is can be poor. Repeatedly I thought, “hmm I thought I just heard that.” And I had because multiple takes were left in. I thought it was just Deja vu but I write this just into chapter 3 and, 24 minutes in, there was another double take. This isn’t a fling at the author or narrator, rather the production team. Their lack of attention to detail takes away from the otherwise fantastic book and performance.

Historia
They say that diplomacy is a gentle art. That mastering it is a lifetime's work. But you do need a certain inclination in that direction. It's not something you can just pick up on the job. A few days ago Sam Vimes was a copper - an important copper, true - chief of police - but still, at his core, a policeman. But today he is an ambassador - to the mysterious, fat-rich country of Uberwald. Today, Sam Vimes is also a man on the run. At some point during his ambassadorship, things went very wrong. It's snowing. It's freezing.

Historia
The City Watch needs men! But what it's got includes Corporal Carrot (technically a dwarf), Lance-Constable Cuddy (really a dwarf), Lance-Constable Detritus (a troll), Lance-Constable Angua (a woman...most of the time) and Corporal Nobbs (disqualified from the human race for shoving). And they need all the help they can get, because someone in Ankh-Morpork has been getting dangerous ideas - about crowns and legendary swords and destiny.

Wonderful story told from the female perspective
Revisado: 09-29-23
A very satisfying murder mystery. The story however offers a lot more: a glimpse into India of the Interwar period from the India perspective, narratives of different Indian women of the time, showing the limitations while still depicting women as agents and not as victims. All in all a very enjoyable story that kept me up late to finish it
