This book gives an excellent overview of the vagus nerve and polyvagal theory. It explains how the dysfunction of the vagus nerve contributes to the development of many diseases and health problems, and that the function of the vagus nerve is to inhibit the stress response and promote calmness and well-being. The author also explains how the vagus nerve is the primary channel through which the body communicates with the environment and how this is essential for survival.
The author provides many references to scientific studies that support her statements and I learned a lot from this book.
The most important concept in this book is the one about accessing the “rest and repair” functions of the vagus nerve. The author explains how this is very useful in healing from trauma, easing the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, gastroparesis, and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (complex PTSD).
This book will be very helpful to doctors, nurses, therapists, and other professionals who are trying to understand how the vagus nerve works and how they can use this knowledge to promote wellness and healing in their patients."

I've taken some beginning yoga classes in my day, but I'm not well versed spiritually. I got this book with the hopes I could pick up something new without being too "out there" for me. Definitely picked up a lot of new concepts and poses; recommended for anyone looking to expand their yoga repertoire.
