Historia
In 2020, Olivia Laing began to restore an eighteenth century walled garden in Suffolk, an overgrown Eden of unusual plants. The work brought to light a crucial question for our age: Who gets to live in paradise, and how can we share it while there's still time? Moving between real and imagined gardens, from Milton's Paradise Lost to John Clare's enclosure elegies, from a wartime sanctuary in Italy to a grotesque aristocratic pleasure ground funded by slavery, Laing interrogates the sometimes shocking cost of making paradise on earth.

Dropped me in the world of Gardens
Revisado: 07-30-24
I have decided to come to gardening as I turn “middle age” and this gave me more of that vision of a garden steeped with history and personal transformative process that comes with it. I had no idea what to expect and this was such a great listening experience that let me to the poetry of Henry Clare, the dairies of Isis Otis, and to finally tackle Milton’s piece. I plan to buy this book now but I could listen to it over again and plan to.

Timeline of Grief, Loss and Dying
Revisado: 07-29-24
This short story addresses the complexity of relationships between women over time as well as grief and loss. This reminds me how teach person has a different timeline for experiencing both and how detached we are in the western world from this part of ourselves. I appreciate the author’s honesty with showing her life. I am glad she was able to write about empathy, love, and hope which it seems she experienced in this part of her life.

Before you quit, listen to this
Revisado: 02-25-22
I came to the teaching profession indirectly and found my place. However, because of personal and professional challenges I found myself about to quit. I was crying when I did a search and found Treleaven’s book. Yes, I was thisclose to crying under my table. Then I listen to this book and applied anything I could to one of my classes that felt impossible to teach. It made a difference in my attitude and that small change has started shifting that class. She is honest and upfront about teaching which hard to find. Thank you for saying out loud the balance truth about teaching.
