Historia
On the morning of August 12, 2022, Salman Rushdie was standing onstage at the Chautauqua Institution, preparing to give a lecture on the importance of keeping writers safe from harm, when a man in black—black clothes, black mask—rushed down the aisle toward him, wielding a knife. His first thought: So it’s you. Here you are. What followed was a horrific act of violence that shook the literary world and beyond.

A Love Story
Revisado: 05-11-24
I was at the opening week at Chautauqua in 2023 when the new security procedures were implemented. Many people grumbled about the inconvenience. All I could think of was it was a small price to pay to protect the voice of a Salman Rushdie. After listening to him read Knife to me, I’m even more resolute in that belief. Mr. Rushdie in all his eloquence has expressed how love and goodness can heal and how religion and evil can destroy. This is a beautiful account of a horrific incident. This is the power of words and the powerlessness of a knife.

My heart is heavy
Revisado: 03-12-24
This was a tough read. But it personalizes what so many people displaced by war go through. The loss, the grief, the fear. The author’s narrative gets into your bones so that you feel it all. Well written, Paul Lynch.

History of a Home
Revisado: 01-08-24
This is a unique tour of American history from the perspective of the home that the characters dwell in over time. The author masterfully develops the characters so that you can almost touch them. He has included mystery, mayhem and murder. He beautifully describes the changes in nature. As a hiker and nature enthusiast who lives in a similar environment, I could visualize the setting so well. A wonderful book with an appropriate ending.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

The development of the characters
Revisado: 01-02-24
The author guides you into learning who the characters are from their youth and their experiences as children to adulthood, weaving in their relationships with each other. It’s a story that holds your attention and has you on the edge of your seat until the end when goodness prevails. I loved this book.

A warning
Revisado: 12-12-23
I read HCR’s letters everyday. She has brought an important historical context to where we are today. It may have been quite a while since many people studied American History and the founding of our Democracy. I urge people to read this book as a refresher and to educate themselves before they vote in the next election.

The Crumbling of America
Revisado: 07-04-23
A straightforward accounting of where this country is in the addiction crisis. Capitalism and greed have created a population of addicts for profit. Yet we have a government that is trying to get us to focus on cultural issues rather than addressing this scourge. This book is eye opening.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Shameful
Revisado: 12-31-17
A reminder of the darkness that is in some peoples hearts. The dehumanization of the native people and sheer greed and entitlement of the white man led them to ruthlessly slaughtering innocent women, children and men. Not something we learn from our history lessons. An important read so that we stay vigilant in these times and not allow this to ever happen again.

Historia
In early 2000, Adnan Syed was convicted and sentenced to life plus thirty years for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, a high school senior in Baltimore, Maryland. Syed has maintained his innocence, and Rabia Chaudry, a family friend, has always believed him. By 2013, after almost all appeals had been exhausted, Rabia contacted Sarah Koenig, a producer at This American Life, in hopes of finding a journalist who could shed light on Adnan’s story. In 2014, Koenig's investigation turned into Serial, a Peabody Award-winning podcast with more than 500 million international listeners.

Incredible
Revisado: 09-05-16
Rabia's candid, open account of Adnan's journey from the emotional as well the factual perspective touched me deeply. We who are not Muslims hear about the bigotry against people who practice the Islamic faith, but this book made it palpable. A young mans life has been derailed because of prejudice and hate, not to mention the peripheral damage to his family and friends. I look forward to the "Addendum" that Rabia will publish when Adnan is finally freed. This is a must read for anyone who had followed Adnan's story since Serial. It fills in the rest of the story. We all should be so blessed as to have a friend like Rabia and to know a person with the qualities that Adnan possesses even after all he has gone through.

When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

A good story set in a disdainful point in history. The author reminds us that we always have a choice between good and evil, no matter how difficult it may be.
