These are the words or sayings (Apophthegmata), of various monks (the abbas, i.e. fathers) who lived in the deserts of Egypt between 250 A.D. and 400 A.D. They cover topics such as love, poverty, fasting, humility, and prayer, and there is usually a short story that gives the context of the sayings. These sayings are one of the few surviving records of the first monks such as St. Anthony the Great and St. Pachomius, who followed a strict way of life. Their sole aim was to draw closer to God through their labours.

Not for dog lovers

I've always heard about Carl Hiaasen, and I guess a lot of people like him, but I couldn't get into this book or his writing. The dialogue in Double Whammy was asinine and totally unbelievable. Nobody is as much of a smartass as all of the characters in this book are... all the time. Though he tries to be racially accommodating with his characters, it still comes out as single dimensional stereotypes. Wise minority sidekicks to the white heroes, who stand up the entirely evil and uncomplicated white bad guys.
I just got so tired of Double Whammy that I had to quit with only a few hours left.
Sorry, but Carl Hiaasen is no Elmore Leonard.

I've always heard that this is a classic, so I thought I'd give it a try.
Sorry, but I think this book is a bit childish and simple minded in it's outlook.
Perhaps it would have been more interesting if I read it when I was 14.
The characters were 2-dimensional, and their actions and motivations were ludicrous. I know The Martian Chronicles is not supposed to be hard scifi, but for me to enjoy even a work of Fantasy, the people have to seem like people... not just some ethereal shadows of sophomoric emotions.
