BJ Harrison is SUCH a talent!
Revisado: 10-21-21
Wodehouse was still young and developing when he wrote this so it is not among the best of his work. It’s still hilarious however and Harrison makes it superb.

Historia
February 1862. The Civil War is less than one year old. The fighting has begun in earnest, and the nation has begun to realize it is in for a long, bloody struggle. Meanwhile, President Lincoln’s beloved eleven-year-old son, Willie, lies upstairs in the White House, gravely ill. In a matter of days, despite predictions of a recovery, Willie dies and is laid to rest in a Georgetown cemetery. “My poor boy, he was too good for this earth,” the president says at the time. “God has called him home.”

Pretty far fetched. And often incoherent.
Revisado: 04-13-18
An experiment that really didn't work out, imho. But it does make you think from time to time. But basically much too weird.

Historia
The hideous Walsingford Hall is home to an odd assortment of coves…The vile premises belong to Sir Buckstone, who is in a little financial difficulty. So for a little monetary help he puts a roof over the heads of people like (among others) Tubby Vanringham, the adoring slave of cold-hearted Miss Whittaker. His brother Joe has fallen head over heels for Sir Buck’s daughter, Jane. She, however, only has eyes for Adrian Peake, who has already formed a liaison with the terrifying - but superbly wealthy - Princess Dwornitzchek. Is there no end to the confusion?

Historia
America was made manifest by its cars. From the assembly lines of Henry Ford to the open roads of Route 66 and Jack Kerouac, America's history is a vehicular history-an idea brought brilliantly to life in this major work by the acclaimed author of Crash Course: The American Automobile Industry's Road from Glory to Disaster.

Historia
In 1919, Texas rancher J. Frank Norfleet lost everything he had in a stock market swindle. He did what many other marks did - he went home, borrowed more money from his family, and returned for another round of swindling. Only after he lost that second fortune did he reclaim control of his story. Instead of crawling back home in shame, he vowed to hunt down the five men who had conned him. Through Norfleet's ingenious reverse-swindle, Amy Reading reveals the mechanics behind the scenes of the big con.

A very pleasant surprise!
Revisado: 03-09-15
Because I selected this book for the subject matter and not for any terrific reviews that were written about it, I wasn't really expecting much. But this is a wonderful piece of work!
Ms. Reading is a superb researcher and a very gifted writer. I hope she's got something new in the works.
And the narration is among the best I've heard in 30 years of listened to narrated books of various kinds.

Historia
Hig survived the flu that killed everyone he knows. His wife is gone, his friends are dead, he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, his only neighbor a gun-toting misanthrope. In his 1956 Cessna, Hig flies the perimeter of the airfield or sneaks off to the mountains to fish and to pretend that things are the way they used to be. But when a random transmission somehow beams through his radio, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life exists beyond the airport.

Ridiculous story, ridiculous premise
Revisado: 09-18-12
What disappointed you about The Dog Stars?
This book was probably written to be sold for the screenplay rights and made into a movie that would appeal to teen-age boys: plenty of shooting, plenty of sex (with, of course, the pretty girl who just happens to conveniently pop up), plenty of action having to do with airplanes. But otherwise basically rather ridiculous and highly implausible. And not even very well written. The occasional attempt to describe the scenery of a burned-out Colorado in poetic terms, aside, I'd be willing to bet that among the three most used words in the book was "F-----" and all its variations. Seriously, in ten hours of listening, it was probably used at least 400 times. Not hugely creative. I'd never heard of Peter Heller before -- and doubt that I'll ever order up something of his again. Ah well, win some, lose some. Sometimes you never know.
