Historia
We are familiar with maps that outline all 50 states. And we are also familiar with the idea that the United States is an "empire", exercising power around the world. But what about the actual territories - the islands, atolls, and archipelagos - this country has governed and inhabited? In How to Hide an Empire, author Daniel Immerwahr tells the fascinating story of the United States outside the United States. In crackling, fast-paced prose, he reveals forgotten episodes that cast American history in a new light.

Revisado: 02-24-25
So that’s what was going on behind all that dull history we studied in school!
Daniel Immerwhar shares myriad fascinating details that make American history read like a novel, and which help explain how we got to where we are today. Our current crises didn’t just happen out of the blue. Who knew?
Bet you didn’t know most of what’s in this book–even if you majored in history.

Historia
In his earlier best sellers Guns, Germs and Steel and Collapse, Jared Diamond transformed our understanding of what makes civilizations rise and fall. Now, in the final audiobook in this monumental trilogy, he reveals how successful nations recover from crisis through selective change - a coping mechanism more commonly associated with personal trauma.

Some Needed Perspective
Revisado: 02-20-25
A useful framework to help determine whether a nation has what it takes to overcome its challenges. Not looking too bright for the US right now. Among others. Diamond lays out how nations have survived their crises in the past–which is reassuring, as well as useful in providing some relevant insight.

Historia
In his final novel - which he considered his most important - Aldous Huxley transports us to the remote Pacific island of Pala, where an ideal society has flourished for 120 years. Inevitably, this island of bliss attracts the envy and enmity of the surrounding world. A conspiracy is underway to take over Pala, and events are set in motion when an agent of the conspirators, a newspaperman named Faranby, is shipwrecked there. What Faranby doesn't expect is how his time with the people of Pala will revolutionize all his values and - to his amazement - give him hope.

A better utopia.
Revisado: 08-27-24
A heartwarming story, a spiritual guide, and a roadmap to a utopian society, all in one. The themes of this novel are being hotly debated in 2024, yet Huxley divined this and published it in 1962. Most worthwhile.

Historia
Populist rage, ideological fracture, economic and technological shocks, geopolitical dangers, and an international system studded with catastrophic risk—the early decades of the 21st century may be one of the most revolutionary periods in modern history. But they are not the first. Humans have lived, and thrived, through more than one great realignment. What makes an age a revolutionary one? And how do they end?

The book I wish I had in high school to decode the patterns and enable me to see the value in studying history.
Perhaps it should be required reading for all high school students.

Historia
The transition to clean energy is moving far too slowly. Trapped by a century of fossil fuel investments and politicians that struggle to plan beyond the next election, the “Big Grid” that powers our modern world is outdated and in dire need of an upgrade. Freeing Energy offers a new and faster path towards a clean energy future — one that is more reliable, more equitable, and cheaper.
