Historia
Julia Fox is famous for many things: her captivating acting, such as her breakout role in the film Uncut Gems; her trendsetting style, including bleached eyebrows, exaggerated eyeshadow, and cutout dresses; her mastery of social media, where she entertains and educates her millions of followers. But all these share the trait for which she is most famous: unabashedly and unapologetically being herself. This commitment to authenticity has never been more on display than in Down the Drain. With writing that is both eloquent and accessible, Fox recounts her turbulent path to cultural supremacy.

Simple but beautiful and painful
Revisado: 04-10-24
It’s certainly written in chronological order and not particularly innovative, but Julia has quite the story and tells it well. Every adult in her life failed her as a child - love to see her overcome that horror.

Plot holes and senseless violence
Revisado: 11-30-23
Narrator: excellent job with a badly written story. I wanted to love this book. But Zalie is not a character who you’d follow into battle - she craves revenge to the point that the need for magic to come back has very little meaning. The plot holes lost me over and over again. In the last minutes, her own dad telling her “revenge is meaningless” and in the next breath saying “if they burn our homes, we will burn theirs”???? Um… no.

This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

Boring and mysoginist
Revisado: 02-23-23
Nothing happened in this book. Absolutely low-stakes storyline and no real character development. Couldn’t stop cringing at the way women were described. Nice to know that ugly women are like hearth fires- loyal and sturdy because they have little value!
Yuck.

Historia
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

Beautifully narrated, haunting story
Revisado: 07-02-22
I knew this was a book I needed to read. But it hits almost a little too close to the belt in 2022… amazing, solemn narration that gives even more life to Lauren’s saga. This apocalypse will taint my perception of the world for a long time.

Historia
The unforgettable narrator of this compelling, thought-provoking debut goes by two names in his two worlds. At the university he attends, he’s Gabriel, a seemingly ordinary, partying student learning about morality at a distance. But in his life outside the classroom, he’s Snoopz, a hard-living member of London’s gangs, well-acquainted with drugs, guns, stabbings, and robbery. Navigating these sides of himself, dealing with loving parents at the same time as treacherous, endangering friends and the looming threat of prison, he is forced to come to terms with who he really is.

Absolutely blown away by this book
Revisado: 06-03-22
Krauze’s voice, quiet and yet very powerful, made this book even better than it must have been on the page. Gabriel is one of the most relatable but alien characters I’ve read in a long time. Loved every minute despite also cringing in pain at some scenes, truly an emotionally charged book. And too real.

Historia
From the debris of her troubled early life, Lidia Yuknavitch weaves an astonishing tale of survival. A kind of memoir that is also a peon to the pursuit of beauty, self-expression, desire - for men and women - and the exhilaration of swimming, The Chronology of Water lays a life bare. It is a life that navigates and transcends abuse, addiction, self-destruction and the crushing loss of a stillborn child. It is the life of a misfit, one that forges a fierce and untrodden path to creativity and comes together in the shape of love.

Tough to get through at times
Revisado: 04-24-22
Yuknavitch is definitely an excellent writer. But at times she leans too much on fraught words like daughter and father, expecting us to understand her intimately.
Plus she calls transgender people tr*nnies - not appreciated. And has a fetish for people with physically nonnormative bodies.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

Enjoyable, easy and well researched
Revisado: 06-29-21
Jaime Lamchik obviously had a great time reading this book, I could hear the laughter in her voice at some of the antics of the con women. Teller did her research and it showed.
The only thing I was missing was more of a conclusion. what makes us love them? What is so interesting about crime, especially white collar crime? I would have liked to see some broader analysis of these trends. But other than that, a pleasant read.

Honestly grossman seems to be an expert... in pop culture. Why would a feminist spend half of a book on witches analyzing men’s 1990’s movies about them?

How did this win a pulitzer?!!!
Revisado: 11-19-19
I’m so relieved to be done with this terrible, cringey book. I even had it on 1.5 speed to get it over with and it was STILL too long. The most wooden (pun intended) writing I’ve had to suffer through in a while. Characters totally unbelievable and deeply stupid and very cutesy - no real substance to anyone. “Heroics” of the worst order. Cannot believe this travesty of a novel won a pulitzer in 2019. Is this the best novel on climate change we have out there? My ears are bleeding.
