Historia
Malibu: August 1983. It’s the day of Nina Riva’s annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over—especially as the offspring of the legendary singer Mick Riva. The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself.

Malibu Who Cares
Revisado: 09-23-21
I read this as my book club monthly reading. Maybe because I was never a Jackie Collins fan, or I find the Kardashians obnoxious, but this book was the most boring, insipid character study I have lumbered through in a very long time. I kept waiting for something exciting to happen, something that would give value to the characters. Instead, we got another out of hand rich people party full of hangers-on. Was never interested in “reality” shows about these types and not interested in reading a lengthy book about them. The narrator did her best with what she had to work with.

A classic old fashion radio drama
Revisado: 05-15-21
This had the best use of sound effects since Public Radio did Star Wars over thirty years ago. Every one of the fx was pivotal to moving the story forward. The actors did a fantastic job. If you have never listened to a radio drama sit back and try this one. Remember, this is how we enjoyed our entertainment prior to the advent of television. It will force you to use your imagination to fill in the visuals. Thank you, James Patterson. Loved it!

Tedious
Revisado: 01-28-20
Sorry - I never liked Peyton Place; I don’t care who shot JR; don’t take joy in the catty incantations of “Real Housewives from wherever “; and have no intention of keeping up with any Kardashian. Perhaps it is because I am a New Yorker (unlike the wannabe author) and grew up in the 60s and 70s that I have absolutely no interest nor sympathy for these characters. These are the people whose distain of real New Yorkers was evident all the time. The Truman Capote I remembered was the one who argued with Gore Vidal, said nasty things about everyone else, and showed up on every talk show every week just to admire himself. I am glad he found a friend in Babe Paley, but none of the so-called glamour fully describes the self centered self righteous attitudes of this group of wealthy trophies that the rest of us saw on a near daily basis.

Historia
Greg Donahue’s The Minuteman, tells the story of one of Newark’s native sons; ex-prizefighter and longtime Zwillman enforcer Sidney Abramowitz, a.k.a. Nat Arno, who took over leadership of the Minutemen in 1934 and made it his personal business to put an end to what he saw as the Bund’s “anti-American” activities. For six years, Arno and his crew of vigilantes battled Newark’s Nazis at every turn. The Minuteman is a story of the ethics of violence in the face of fascism; a forgotten legacy that is as relevant now as it was nearly a hundred years ago.

Riveting!
Revisado: 01-17-20
This is a well written story so many of us need to know. It’s relevance in today’s world should not be taken lightly. I hope this story catches the attention of Ken Burns or PBS so it can be told on a wider platform to a larger audience.

From her first strokes as a novice, Ginny Gilder found herself in a new world, training with Olympic rowers and participating in the famous Title IX naked protest, which helped define the movement for equality in college sports. Short, asthmatic, and stubborn, Gilder made the team against all odds and for the next 10 years devoted herself to answering a seemingly simple question: how badly do you want to go fast?

great read
Revisado: 01-16-20
This is a wonderful passionate account of one woman’s experience maturing in the wake of Title IX. I predate and never had the opportunities this mandate provided. Although I was the best first baseman ( a lefty) on my dad’s Little League team in Brooklyn, I wasn’t allowed to play because I was a girl. As a crew mom for 7 years to my daughter’s club team and D1 team, I could relate to the determination, drive and angst of Ginny’s quest. The book is a great read for people not familiar with this sport. I was disappointed in the narrator. Her inflections were too much Barbie and not as much like those female warriors I got to know catching crabs, rigging boats sufffering disappointing erg scores and hard fought finishes. Ginny and Lynn are still living their true lives and still support this sport. You go, girls!!

Revisado: 01-03-20
Certainly not the ending I expected! I had recently read The Elephant Whisperer, picking it because it just seemed interesting. Little did I know that that biographical book would be echoed throughout this story! Loved the story, plot line, and the ending. Spoiler Alert: there is a certain Bruce Willis movie this will be reminicent of.....

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

were the 5 star reviews robo-reviews??
Revisado: 02-25-19
If you are looking for the book in the official Audile summary page- this isn’t it. While beautifully read, the endlessly embellished prose become so difficult to listen to that I needed to re-play sections many times. The sections of “intrigue” would have been great if not for the endless discussion of what to do or whatnot to do or maybe I should do or what happens if I do..... The proselytizing doesn’t stop until the last truly worthwhile paragraph- if you can get through the book to it.
