Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Fascinating story; Masterfully narrated.

Enticed by Gregory's Tidelands, I had to hear this one, too. Not disappointed! Louise Brealey read superbly, British and Italian accents alike.

It is 1486 and Venice is a wealthy, opulent center for trade. Orsola Rosso is the eldest daughter in a family of glassblowers on Murano, the island revered for the craft. As a woman, she is not meant to work with glass—but she has the hands for it, the heart, and a vision. When her father dies, she teaches herself to make glass beads in secret, and her work supports the Rosso family fortunes.

Fascinating "time-travel" concept
Revisado: 07-23-24
Have read most of Chevalier's work. This one captured the history of Venice, Murano, and glassmaking in a thorough and fascinating way - up to my expectations. Not so as far as narration goes, unfortunately: An exaggerated and some times just wrong "Italian" pronunciation (e.g. weight on wrong syllables), and a tendency to read women as little girls instead of mature characters detracted from the listening experiences.

Historia
When Matt Ballard was starting out his career, three boys were murdered in the same area, the remote and bleak Gibbet Fen. When the main suspect was killed in a hit-and-run, the killings stopped. But Matt was not satisfied that the real murderer had been caught. Over 25 years later, Matt gets a photo in an unmarked envelope. It's of the Gibbet Fen crime scene. And the picture was taken before the murder took place. More photos arrive, relating to the historic murders, as well as intimate pictures of Matt's very secret private life.

Mediocre Ellis, but good pace
Revisado: 04-02-24
Like Joy Ellis, and have listened to lots of her books. Did not particular ly care for this DCI Matt Ballard book, though. To me, the characters seem complex but not developed well enough. Some are cliché to the point of being caricatures. The superintendent is a case in point. The sex is not good. That is, not well written. Nuance and insinuation would have been just as fine there. Then there is the reader... Ferguson has been praised for the way he reads female characters so well. I totally disagree! I find that he has ruined every chance these women (Liz and Gemma) ever had of seeing halfway intelligent by giving them whiny, puny so-called women's voices. I almost had to quit at one point due to this. Ellis generally writes spunky, smart women. Ferguson does them no favors at all, in my opinion. Three stars for performance is generous, salvaged by his way with British (male) accents.

Historia
In Kindred, Neanderthal expert Becky Wragg Sykes shoves aside the cliché of the shivering ragged figure in an icy wasteland and reveals the Neanderthal you don’t know, who lived across vast and diverse tracts of Eurasia and survived through hundreds of thousands of years of massive climate change. Using a thematic rather than chronological approach, this book will shed new light on where they lived, what they ate and the increasingly complex Neanderthal culture that is being discovered.

To read this is to know them a little!
Revisado: 07-17-23
It's a huge feat of compilation. A vast amount of scientific literature, evidence, controversy and (well-informed) speculation has been synthesized into a story that is believable, informative and evocative of vistas in my mind's eye. Not a "memento mori" from the point of view of a lineage that died out as much as a "memento vivere" for us. Could not stop listening! Lovingly and thoughtfully read by the author, it could not have been presented any more faithfully than this.

Historia
The unapologetic intensity with which Emily Brontë wrote this story ensures that it will forever be considered one of the greatest works of English literature. A passionate tale of a chaotic and often violent love, Wuthering Heights transcends your average romance and, with its Gothic undertones, takes the listener on a journey through one man's lustful hunt for revenge.

Joanne Froggatt: Reader extraordinaire! Accents (she's a "native," and I love that), moods, passion, fear, delight... Makes an old story come truly alive, and a tale read and told many times over new again. Big thanks for a really great listen.

Revisado: 09-10-21
Rick Bragg is such a storyteller. Here are stories to laugh at, to cry over, and to want to hear again. Just listen to this man talk about buying clothes, for example. Priceless! Alabama - and much of the South - have emerged from a clouded impression and now shine through this collection.

Historia
In 2001, a community of people in the Appalachian foothills had come to the edge of all they had ever been. Across the South, padlocks and chains bound the doors of silent mills, and it seemed a miracle to blue-collar people in Jacksonville, Alabama, that their mill still bit, shook, and roared. The mill had become almost a living thing, and they served it even as it filled their lungs with lint and shortened their lives. In return, it let them live in stiff-necked dignity in the hills of their fathers.

Beautifully written, beautifully read. Bragg's sorrowful, smooth rendition of his book leaves you feeling as if you lost a friend or family member when someone in the stories die. No question of its authenticity, this is the real deal. And now I know what cotton mill work - mill town life and death - was really like.
