Must-read classic
Revisado: 02-11-07
If you haven't read this before, it's a story you will enjoy very much. It is a classic that is referenced often in modern culture and it will do you good to familiarize yourself with it, even if you read it a long time ago. Although the narrator has an English accent, it is still very easy to understand.

Historia
Little is known about the Ancient Greek oral poet Homer, the supposed 8th century BC author of the world-read Iliad and his later masterpiece, The Odyssey. These classic epics provided the basis for Greek education and culture throughout the classical age and formed the backbone of humane education through the birth of the Roman Empire and the spread of Christianity.

borning narrator
Revisado: 02-11-07
I read the Iliad and the odyssey in college and loved it. Thought I'd get a different perspective and listen to it on audio. Boy, that was a mistake. The narrator speaks in monotone, I now use it when I want to fall asleep!

Narration is awful!
Revisado: 10-31-06
This is another classic that has awful narration. A thick French accent that is difficult to understand. The narrator does not help bring the story to life and actually takes away from it. Read the book or use a different version on audio, but don't bother with this version.

Revisado: 10-31-06
I love all of Anita Shreve's books. "All he ever wanted", "light on snow", and "Sea Glass" are among my favorites. If you haven't read any of her books, this is a great one to start with. The story is very heart-warming.

Horrendous narration
Revisado: 10-31-06
This is a great story, at least from what I remember when I read it 10 years ago! I enjoyed some of the other classics on audio so much and decided to give this one a try. The narration is awful, so difficult to understand and it seems like it's on fast forward. I had to slow the narration on my ipod so that I could understand what was being said. Very disappointed at the quality of this audiobook, this is a first as I have enjoyed every other narrator I've heard thusfar. The one star is not directed at the story, but at the awful narration!

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

The circus as it should be
Revisado: 10-31-06
When I first read the overview for the book, I was not at all interested. I would have missed this great story had my friend not insisted that I get the book. It is so well written, the animals and characters will keep you entertained the entire time. You will be on that train with them, experiencing the adventures, fears, and thrills of an on-road circus. With all this technology in the 21st century, we don't go to the circus in real life, so go there in your mind, you'll love it!

Great mystery!
Revisado: 10-31-06
I was definitely enveloped by this story, loved the way it was written. You get to experience the perspectives of the various characters. You'll get to know them so well that their actions will seem so natural to you, not fake and fiction. The suspense will keep you listening! I must admit that I did double check my door/window locks every night while I was listening to this book!
