Historia
When Catalina is admitted to Harvard, it feels like the fulfillment of destiny: a miracle child escapes death in Latin America, moves to Queens to be raised by her undocumented grandparents, and becomes one of the chosen. But nothing is simple for Catalina, least of all her own complicated, contradictory, ruthlessly probing mind. Now a senior, she faces graduation to a world that has no place for the undocumented; her sense of doom intensifies her curiosities and desires. She infiltrates the school’s elite subcultures—internships and literary journals, posh parties and secret societies.

Historia
John, an impoverished Scottish minister, has accepted a job evicting the lone remaining occupant of an island north of Scotland—Ivar, who has been living alone for decades, with only the animals and the sea for company. Though his wife, Mary, has serious misgivings about the errand, he decides to go anyway, setting in motion a chain of events that neither he nor Mary could have predicted.

Exquisite, lovely, moving
Revisado: 05-11-24
Every time I paused this book, it felt like I had to extract myself from a remote cabin on a remote island in 19th century Scotland; the characters and the landscape were that vivid. The language was exquisite and pleasurable to experience. And the arc of the story was affecting and life-affirming. I’m grateful to have learned about The Scottish Clearances, an important and unlovely period of history, in the loveliest possible way.

Historia
Temp jobs, conspiracy theories, squatters, talk therapy, urban gardening, the robot revolution: this collection fixes its eye on the strangeness of labor, through poems that are searching, keen, and wry. The virtuosic central sequence explores the untimely death of the poet’s estranged father, a handyman and addict, and the brothers left to sort through the detritus of a life long lost to them. Through lyrical, darkly humorous vignettes, Kunz asks what it costs to build a home and a love that not only lasts but sustains.

Gorgeous
Revisado: 09-04-23
I wish I could slip this book of poetry into mailboxes of people across America. Edgar Kunz is the rare poet for both those who think they hate poetry and those who have dedicated their lives to the love of poetry. Kunz’s language is spare and muscular, unflinching and erotic and tender. Somehow both direct and exquisitely subtle. There is much to admire here. The middle section— the title poem— is astonishing. As is the penultimate poem. It was a pleasure to hear him read his work aloud. I plan to relisten and reread and preorder whatever he writes next. Thank you for your art.

Historia
In the cold seminal countryside of eastern Washington, a boy puts a bullet through his skull in a high school parking lot. An uncle crushes oxycodone into “a thousand red granules.” Hawks wheel above a dark, indifferent river. “I left that town / forever,” Holbert writes, but its bruises appear everywhere, in dreams of violent men and small stars, the ghosts of friends and pills. These poems incite a complex emotional discourse on what it means to leave—if it’s ever actually possible, or if our roots only grow longer to accommodate the distance.

Masterful
Revisado: 07-21-23
Jackson’s poems evoke the work of Franz Wright and Rilke but also announce a wholly new voice in American poetry. The river, the snow, the pills… there is violence here and also mercy, a kind of generosity and humor that flow out of a close attention to death and loss. I recommend pausing the recording in between each poem, and reading it with the physical version of the text nearby. I will be thinking about these poems for a long time. Winter Stranger is a masterclass on how to end a poem! I loved living inside the landscape of this book, and I plan to relisten to this book and read whatever Jackson writes next.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

One of the best books I’ve read this year
Revisado: 05-14-23
My best friend highly recommended Piranesi to me, and I’m so glad I trusted her opinion. This is a novel unlike any other. The first two hours are gentle, intentionally rhythmic and repeating, and then there is a turn and it almost starts to feel like a philosophical thriller. Without giving too much away, I think this book will particularly resonate with people who have been involved in cultish groups, undergone a significant belief change, or simply feel an extraordinary distance from a past version of the self. The writing was phenomenal; the narrator was perfect. I would like to read Plato and C.S. Lewis and Borges and then return and reread Piranesi.

Historia
Lydia Millet's exquisite new novel tells the story of an Arizona man’s relationship with the family next door, whose house has one wall made entirely out of glass. The story delivers attraction and love, friendship and grief. But Millet also evokes the uncanny. Through close observation of human and animal life in the desert, she captures the daunting scale of human society without losing sight of the real difference one person can make in the world. Written with humor and benevolence, Dinosaurs asks big questions: Can a person be good? Can a man be good?

Savored this one
Revisado: 03-15-23
A lovely novel with endearing characters that feel very real. Will recommend to friends and plan to reread. I wasn’t sure about the narrator at first but he grew on me. And I loved the reflective nature of this text, how political and ecological undercurrents were present but not overpowering. No one existed outside of Gil’s compassion. I miss him already.

Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

Historia
In these gorgeously written and timely pieces, prizewinning poet and author Gay considers the joy we incite when we care for each other, especially during life’s inevitable hardships. Throughout Inciting Joy, he explores how we can practice recognizing that connection, and also, crucially, how we can expand it. Taking a clear-eyed look at injustice, political polarization, and the destruction of the natural world, Gay shows us how we might resist, how the study of joy might lead us to a wild, unpredictable, transgressive, and unboundaried solidarity. In fact, it just might help us survive.

Beautiful and moving
Revisado: 01-05-23
Ross Gay is one of my favorite poets & writers and this book meant as much to me as his other works. I think the title fits, but I do want to tell other potential readers that the emphasis is on Inciting rather than Joy. It is a book about joy, but it’s also a book about grief and anger and injustice. It’s not a simple heartwarming book; it’s an exploration of how capitalism and racism dehumanize us, and how caring for one another as we grieve and change can produce joy. I laughed aloud and smiled many times while listening— I love that he reads it himself, and reads it very well— and wrote down many quotes and song recommendations. I’m so glad Inciting Joy exists and that I had the opportunity to witness it. I’m sure I’ll be rereading it often, like I do with the Book of Delights.

Historia
From one of Britain's most celebrated writers of color, Girl, Woman, Other is a magnificent portrayal of the intersections of identity and a moving and hopeful story of an interconnected group of black British women. Winner of the 2019 Booker Prize and short-listed for the Gordon Burn Prize, Girl, Woman, Other paints a vivid portrait of the state of post-Brexit Britain, as well as looking back to the legacy of Britain's colonial history in Africa and the Caribbean.

I completely understand why this won the Booker Prize! Brilliant storytelling- I couldn’t stop thinking about these characters. I’d recommend taking notes while listening so you can keep all the characters straight; it adds a layer of enjoyment to see (and predict) how the stories will link together in the end. Just finished listening and I already miss this world
