Historia
VC tells the riveting story of how the industry arose from the United States' long-running orientation toward entrepreneurship. Venture capital has been driven from the start by the pull of outsized returns through a skewed distribution of payoffs - a faith in low-probability but substantial financial rewards that rarely materialize. Whether the gamble is a whaling voyage setting sail from New Bedford or the newest startup in Silicon Valley, VC is not just a model of finance that has proven difficult to replicate in other countries.

Awesome Academic History of VC Industry
Revisado: 01-23-24
The long history of venture capital, dating back to the early 1800 New England whaling vessels, the region’s early forays into textiles, and England’s attempts to avoid such technology transfer were fascinating. Learning how mid 1900s Boston & Wall Street venture capital migrated to San Francisco Bay Area was equally fascinating. A long arc of history.

My only disappointment was …
Revisado: 10-06-23
… that Scott Adams did not narrate the book himself (grin^grin); although I was listening to the podcast episode, where he described why he gave up on doing his own narration.
Content was compelling enough that I also bought the paperback version.
While listening to the narration during my commute to/from work, I had the opportunity to literally reframe an event at work such that the stress melted away regarding the event. BRAVO !!!

Historia
Michael Shellenberger has been fighting for a greener planet for decades. He helped save the world’s last unprotected redwoods. He co-created the predecessor to today’s Green New Deal. And he led a successful effort by climate scientists and activists to keep nuclear plants operating, preventing a spike of emissions. But in 2019, as some claimed "billions of people are going to die", contributing to rising anxiety, including among adolescents, Shellenberger decided that he needed to speak out to separate science from fiction.

Outstanding - each chapter is a whipsaw with a human at the center
Revisado: 03-24-22
Each chapter has a third-world or rather developing world female resident (Indonesia, Congo, Amazon, etc) seeking a better life as the chapter’s bystander objectively harmed by their being denied high-density fuel energy source now rather than the someday over the rainbow luxury virtue signaling unreliable fuel source in the future.
Each chapter begins with “the myth” we heard before from the nightly news and the big-city newspapers; however, “the myth” is then punctured with “but none of that is true, the reality is ….” with copious chapter verse citations to DOT-GOV references debunking the environmental myths.
Sadly, the third world bystanders do not _ALL_ see an improvement in their living standards nor see an improvement in their local environmental health. Those that do are those who received energy from higher density reliable energy sources.
Solar & Wind, both backed by Natural Gas interests seeking profits from providing Natural Gas Electrical Power Plants, are not reliable and are more expensive and more harmful than just building an ordinary hydroelectric dam, an ordinary Natural Gas Electrical Power Plants, or an ordinary Nuclear Power Plant

Historia
At once provocative and laugh-out-loud funny, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother ignited a global parenting debate with its story of one mother’s journey in strict parenting. Amy Chua argues that Western parenting tries to respect and nurture children’s individuality, while Chinese parents typically believe that arming children with skills, strong work habits, and inner confidence prepares them best for the future.

Fake News Completely Mischaracterized this Book
Revisado: 06-13-21
Strongly recommended read/listen. Years after publication, I finally read/listen to Amy’s book. Less a Rah-Rah we do it better and more a confessional to herself, husband, daughters and parents. Filled with all the typical troupes (eg teenage girl temper tantrum). Sadly, much like Antonio Martinez Garcia’s “Chaos Monkeys”, the obvious entertaining literary license evident throughout this book, will no doubt be used against Amy when she is appointed to the Court, public office, and/or a Board Seat.

Advice to my younger self?
Revisado: 03-02-21
As a 55 year old who has perhaps reached a particular comfort level, I wish such multi-faceted advice as “Gorilla Mindset” had been a book for me to read at age 25 or even 35. I am certain I would have accelerated things. What a marvelous time to be alive, where the internet is literally changing everything far faster than change was occurring in 1980s & 1990s. Nothing Cernovich suggests is unreasonable; although, he should have provided more cautions with respect to weightlifting. Yes he said the perfunctory medical disclaimers; however, he should have suggested wannabe weekend warrior weightlifter get some professional coaching for a month or two to avoid common beginner injuries associated with the basic lifts (deadlift, bench, squat, press). His investing advice is sound: buy index funds, a wee-bit every month. I will be recommending this book to nephews & nieces.

Historia
One of Silicon Valley’s most audacious chaos monkeys is Antonio García Martínez. After stints on Wall Street and as CEO of his own startup, García Martínez joined Facebook’s nascent advertising team. Forced out in the wake of an internal product war over the future of the company’s monetization strategy, García Martínez eventually landed at rival Twitter. In Chaos Monkeys, this gleeful contrarian unravels the chaotic evolution of social media and online marketing and reveals how it is invading our lives and shaping our future.

“Liar’s Poker” version of “HP Way”
Revisado: 07-19-20
Quibble with Antonio claim(?) that SiliconValley does not write its own history - HP co-founder Dave Packard wrote the autobiography of HP “The HP Way”; albeit without the sex drugs and alcohol described in “Chaos Monkeys”. Likewise Andy Grove wrote two books about SiliconValley - “High Output Management” and “Only the Paranoid Survive” (again without sex drugs and alcohol ☹️☹️☹️). Otherwise, an Antonio has written an outstanding autobiography of his hero’s journey from the mortgage meltdown wreckage of GoldmanSachs to the post-Election2016 myth busting of Facebook specifically and social media generally swinging the Election. Along the way, you will learn that Internet advertising is still in the shadow of direct Mail advertisers (eg crawl-space attic clean out contractors keep advertising and I keep saving their inserts ?!?!). Strongly recommend reading/listening if you have the startup, entrepreneur, venture capital, Angel investor, advertising, SaaS itch.

Historia
The Second World Wars examines how combat unfolded in the air, at sea, and on land to show how distinct conflicts among disparate combatants coalesced into one interconnected global war. Drawing on 3,000 years of military history, Victor Davis Hanson argues that despite its novel industrial barbarity, neither the war's origins nor its geography were unusual. Nor was its ultimate outcome surprising. The Axis powers were well prepared to win limited border conflicts, but once they blundered into global war, they had no hope of victory.

Revisado: 09-15-19
Victor’s book is an important and unique perspective on WW2, looking at it from a spreadsheet perspective, demonstrating that on Day-1 of WW2 that National Socialist Germany, its Fascist ally Italy, and its Militarist ally Japan literally had no path to victory, if one considered population sizes, Gross Domestic Product, and the like

Historia
Only once in the last 250,000 years have humans stumbled upon a way to lift ourselves out of the endless cycle of poverty, hunger, and war that defines most of history. If democracy, individualism, and the free market were humankind’s destiny, they should have appeared and taken hold a bit earlier in the evolutionary record. The emergence of freedom and prosperity was nothing short of a miracle.

Awesome!!! Jonah “Pants” Goldberg hits it out of the park!!!
Revisado: 08-16-18
Awesome narration by Jonah himself, making clear that his voice is needed to narrate his earlier awesome book “Liberal 😀 Fascism”
Well worth the Audible purchase. Pondering buying 15 hard copies as Christmas presents ... if available as paperback (hint hint hint).
Good news for Trump Super Fans: his extensive criticism of “Cheeto”, with supporting evidence, is in the last two chapters (20 & 21). Until then he makes a compelling case against tribalism identity politics etc. His source material is in effect The Great Books supplemented by the historical commentary of the last 4000+ years (eg Churchill’s “History Of the English Speaking Peoples”). You will hit PAUSE and digest what he said/wrote. Compelling.
Bad News for Never Trumpers: Jonah’s last two chapters don’t make the compelling “Never Trump” case; although it’s far better than an unhinged TDS Max Boot “worse than Stalin” comparison. Argument needs refinement over multi day CSPAN seminar with Henry Olsen, Kurt Schlichter, and Jonah. A bartender serving adult beverages all day as arbitrator would be helpful.

Historia
Between 1485 and 1688, England became a Protestant country under Henry VIII. His daughter, Elizabeth I, battled for succession and supremacy at home, and the discovery of 'the round world' enabled a vast continent across the Atlantic to be explored. While this new era was spawning the beginnings of modern America, England was engaged in a bloody civil war and sustained a Republican experiment under the leadership of Oliver Cromwell.
