Compelling Story
Revisado: 03-11-25
A little disappointed as I listened that only a fraction of the story surrounded the four doctors mentioned in the book’s description. With my Great Uncle having been a POW doctor I was hoping to learn more about what his experience had been like. However most of the story revolved around all that was happening around the doctors. That being said, the story was still very interesting, well written and well performed.

Historia
Seabiscuit was one of the most electrifying and popular attractions in sports history and the single biggest newsmaker in the world in 1938, receiving more coverage than FDR, Hitler, or Mussolini. But his success was a surprise to the racing establishment, which had written off the crooked-legged racehorse with the sad tail.

Great story
Revisado: 02-11-25
I listened to this book to see how closely the movie aligned to it. There were a number of differences but this book is compelling in its own right. The differences actually make the story more complete. Well read and told.

Historia
An “extraordinary” (New York Review of Books) novel based on the true story of how German war profiteer and factory director Oskar Schindler came to save more Jews from the gas chambers than any other single person during World War II. In this milestone of Holocaust literature, Thomas Keneally, author of The Book of Science and Antiquities and The Daughter of Mars, uses the actual testimony of the Schindlerjuden — Schindler’s Jews — to brilliantly portray the courage and cunning of a good man in the midst of unspeakable evil.

I chose to listen to this audiobook because the movie is so amazing and I wanted to go straight to the source material. The details and the narrator and the story itself are all incredibly inspiring. Thank you for putting this amazing book to audio.

Historia
Honus Wagner, whose career in baseball (most of it with the Pittsburgh Pirates) stretched from 1895 to 1917, was the first American sports superstar of the twentieth century. One of the first five players to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in its first year (1939), he was probably the best shortstop in baseball's history.

Solid performance and historical account but lacks depth
Revisado: 07-02-24
The performance of the reader was very well done. While the historical information about Honus Wagner was solid, the depth of the story was lacking. It was essentially a lot of retelling of box scores and a bunch of people surrounding Wagner. Intimate details of Wagner’s life were missing, no doubt because they don’t exist. But still, a solid book.

Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich's plans while at her husband's side, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star.

Amazing Woman Amazing Story
Revisado: 04-15-24
When I first listened to the sample I wasn’t sure I would like the narration. But once I got in to the audio book I realized it was just the perfect tone and the subtle changes for each character were perfect. The story was somewhat known to me but this filled in all the gaps of this amazing story.

Historia
The celebrated 2010 HBO miniseries The Pacific, winner of eight Emmy Awards, was based on two classic books about the War in the Pacific, Helmet for My Pillow and With The Old Breed. Audible Studios, in partnership with Playtone, the production company co-owned by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, and creator of the award-winning HBO series Band of Brothers, John Adams, and The Pacific, as well as the HBO movie Game Change, has created new recordings of these memoirs, narrated by the stars of the miniseries.

Easy Company, 506th Airborne Division, U.S. Army, was as good a rifle company as any in the world. From their rigorous training in Georgia in 1942 to D-Day and victory, Ambrose tells the story of this remarkable company, which kept getting the tough assignments. Easy Company was responsible for everything from parachuting into France early D-Day morning to the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden. Band of Brothers is the account of the men of this remarkable unit.

It was a terrific book filling in lots of the smaller details, not seen in the TV series. It was great hearing some of the alternate stories, and also seeing a few ways in which the book varied from the miniseries. Highly recommend.

Audie Murphy was a desperately poor eighteen-year-old orphan when he joined the Army, nineteen when he first saw a buddy die from an enemy bullet and an enemy die from one of his own. By VE day, he had killed at least 240 Germans, had single-handedly destroyed a German tank in one battle and held off six tanks in another, and had become the most decorated soldier in American history, winning every medal his country offered, including the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Historia
Ty Cobb is baseball royalty, maybe even the greatest player who ever lived. His lifetime batting average is still the highest of all time, and when he retired in 1928, after twenty-one years with the Detroit Tigers and two with the Philadelphia Athletics, he held more than ninety records. But the numbers don't tell half of Cobb's tale. The Georgia Peach was by far the most thrilling player of the era: "Ty Cobb could cause more excitement with a base on balls than Babe Ruth could with a grand slam," one columnist wrote.

Revisado: 07-06-23
For years, I had heard that the existing books about Ty Cobb were full of errors and untruths. I fretted about which audio book to get but am glad I chose this one. The author seemed intent on uncovering truth and documenting for accuracy. Well written and performed.
