Historia
In 1971, a property speculator named Harley Mann begins recording his life story onto a reel-to-reel machine. Reflecting on his childhood in the early 20th century, Harley recounts that after his father’s sudden death, his family migrated down to Florida’s swamplands—mere miles away from what would become Disney World—to join a community of Shakers.

Intriguing
Revisado: 11-19-24
Very intriguing story line with just enough Shaker Florida history to make it believable. Also, knowing how Disney purchased land in Florida also lends a semblance of reality. The characters were well developed and had just enough intrigue to keep you reading more. A very good book.

Why we need book and history
Revisado: 06-20-23
This is precisely why we need history taught and books about historical events read. This event has really touched me, it makes us wonder about the evil men will do in the name of greed.

Historia
At once profoundly personal and far-reaching, Exit Interview with My Grandmother serves as a meditation on the beginning of a young woman’s life and the series of questions that arise from examining love, loss, family, memory, and death. Moving between cities and centuries, Meyersohn probes her family's Jewish history and her grandparents' relationships in part to decipher her own young queer relationships, but also to examine how we ought to behave in the face of a world riddled with uncertainty and doubt.

Historia
Librarian Martha Storm has always found it easier to connect with books than people—though not for lack of trying. She keeps careful lists of how to help others in her superhero-themed notebook. And yet, sometimes it feels like she’s invisible. All of that changes when a book of fairy tales arrives on her doorstep. Inside, Martha finds a dedication written by her best friend—her grandmother Zelda—who died under mysterious circumstances years ago. When Martha discovers a clue within the book that her grandmother may still be alive, she becomes determined to discover the truth.

Predicable
Revisado: 03-20-20
I love the narrator of this book and listen to others. After a bit, the story is predictable. This is the reason I don’t read or listen to many novels. Somehow always the same outline.

Historia
Nancy Sorel’s portrait pays homage to these unsung heroes. They came from Boston, New York, Milwaukee, and St. Louis; from Yakima, Washington; Austin, Texas; and Sioux City, Iowa; from San Francisco and all points east. They left comfortable homes and safe surroundings for combat-zone duty. As women war correspondents, they brought to the battlefields of World War II a fresh optic, and reported back home what they witnessed with a new sensibility.

Wonderful insight into women and WWII
Revisado: 03-10-20
I’m always fascinated to learn more about the role of women in all facets of history. There are many brave women who either knowingly or unknowingly changed history by being there. The women in this book took risks professionally, and life threatening to get the story and report the war and its atrocities. I’m going to have to find biographies on some of these individual women.

Historia
Without John C. Houbolt, a mid-level engineer at NASA, Apollo 11 would never have made it to the moon. Top NASA engineers on the project, including Werner Von Braun, strongly advocated for a single, huge spacecraft to travel to the moon, land, and return to Earth. It's the scenario used in 1950s cartoons and horror movies about traveling to outer space. Houbolt had another idea: Lunar Orbit Rendezvous. LOR would link two spacecraft in orbit while the crafts were travelling at 3,600 miles an hour around the moon. His plan was ridiculed and considered unthinkable.

Revisado: 02-07-20
This was interesting as I never knew about the inner workings of NASA. There are so many unsung heroes who promoted great progress in the 60’s and 70’s we should all know about, this is just one example.

Mo Rocca has always loved obituaries - reading about the remarkable lives of global leaders, Hollywood heavyweights, and innovators who changed the world. Now with Mobituaries, the audiobook, he has gone much further, with all new essays on artists, entertainers, sports stars, political pioneers, founding fathers, and more. Even if you know the names, you’ve never understood why they matter...until now.
