I was ecstatic about this audio release and relieved that the quality of the original book was preserved. The action and twists are thrilling, and the characters could be people from your own life. Eagerly anticipating the audio release of the second book!

Terrible Accent

The story is entertaining enough, but the terrible British accent is so distracting. It’s too apparent that a modern American woman is pretending to be regency.

If Only I Could Cut Out Half the Story

The character Fenris ruined this story for me. He is a tired old trope and unnecessary to the story. I probably would have enjoyed Marra far better without him. She began the story as a courageous, determined defender who wilted into an insecure, emotionally-fragile damsel who could lean on him for support. All her tedious inner monologues diluted the potency of the story — and it’s a great story sans this forced pandering outdated “romance.” I love a good romance woven into a story. This was not one.

As for the narrator, please never attempt an English accent again. Stick to what you know. You’re great. You don’t need dialects. This one was very very bad.

Partial Story; Frustrating Narration

I wish I could get a refund. I picked an abridged version. The frustrating narrator takes long pauses after every sentence.

Violence and cruelty

This is certainly a well-crafted, imaginative, and captivating story. However, I was shocked that a children’s story, especially one featuring a 12 year old, would contain so much disturbing cruelty and violence. The violence was cruelty were not just limited to pivotal moments but sprinkled throughout. Much as I enjoyed other elements of the story, this tender-hearted adult will not be competing the series.

Entertaining and Smart

Characters were vivid. Story was captivating. Social commentary was subtle and smart. At moments I laughed. Please make an Audible version of the second story in the series!

Disappointed

Some of the reasons why I love this author's work and her original version of this story, were lost in the updated version. It was much more effective in the original version when I as the reader was given the autonomy to respond emotionally to a story and come to my own conclusions. The updated version was more a heavy-handed sermon than a story, and I lost the empathy I had originally felt for the characters.

The descriptions of the heroine's field working friends in the second half of the book also took me out of the story. They seemed more like moral devices than essential players. They were too perfect, one-dimensional, and unrealistic.

I'm frustrated that the editors of this book failed to steer the author onto a better track. Please don't ruin her other books!

Awful

This "actress" reads too fast and sounds 100 years too old to be playing the young character in the story. The acting is pretty poor too. I couldn't stand to listen past the first 2 minutes. Sad. I love this book.
