unusual magicks + ace romance
Revisado: 07-21-21
I was surprised and delighted by the asexual or demisexual character. The passionate descriptions of the thrill of intentional touching, enthusiastic consent, were inspiring. This world, its characters, its rules of magic are a lovely springboard to more stories. I hope the author agrees. The narrator had both luscious tones and a very animated emotional pitch. Sadly, the text was so filled with the protagonist's self doubts and anxiety... it was exhausting to hear. It made the protagonist difficult to like at times. I longed for some monotone delivery.

Historia
Unpacking her belongings in her new hometown of Portland, Oregon, herbalist and reformed alchemist Zoe Faust can't help but notice she's picked up a stowaway. Dorian Robert-Houdin is a living, breathing three-and-half-foot gargoyle - not to mention a master of French cuisine - and he needs Zoe's expertise to decipher a centuries-old text. Zoe, who's trying to put her old life behind her, isn't so sure she wants to reopen her alchemical past... until the dead man on her porch leaves her no choice.

Gargoyle chef makes you hungry for more
Revisado: 06-27-21
The character of the Gargoyle chef is delightful. Altogether an enjoyable read. The characters are pleasant company to keep. I found the alchemist character unbelievable. I very much enjoy the creation of new magicks, mythos, and rule sets and I love when authors plunge into unexplored (or under-explored) waters. That said, the author's idea of the alchemist was more akin to a modern-day SCA-dian or video game persona than what I imagine the immortal alchemist soul to be. Rather than a hippy dippy herbalist with awkward and unintentional forays into the magical world, think instead of who alchemists were! I want a mix of Dr. Dee and Marie Curie. Wild scientists with a reckless bent ready to pull stars from sky and kidnap angels from heaven to wrest creation's secrets and bend physics to their will and curiosity. What would a modern-day alchemist be like in a world that has cracked the genome and split the atom? A fearsome wonder. Add to it a spiritualist's optimism. An uncanny knowledge of occult secrets, wisdoms of lost peoples, etc.
But that is my criticism of the book Pandian didn't write, rather than the one she did. The humble reluctant haunted woman (with a tendency to forget to eat or sleep when working on a puzzle) is likable enough. The people who surround her are ones you will be delighted to meet again. They are a perfect cast for a cosy mystery with fantasy elements.
THE FOOD. Oh, the descriptions of food. The gargoyle's delight in cooking and the vegan delicacies sent me into foodgasms. I constantly thought: I've got to try that "recipe".
Performance review: Julia Motyka was an engaged and engaging narrator. She only mispronounced Willamette once. And her voices were distinct enough to be enjoyable without anxiety. Her gargoyle's french accent was charming (but I'm no judge of accents) and more importantly, his OUTRAGE at various culinary indignities was palpable and believable. The book includes a healthy cast of characters, including red herrings, teenagers, and murder suspects. The conversations between them were easy to follow and the characters were distinct.

Historia
Three years ago in a large Victorian house on the Jersey Shore in the town of Harbor Haven, fledgling private investigator Paul and his client, Maxie Malone, were murdered. Since then, recent divorcée and reluctant ghost whisperer Alison Kerby and her 10-year-old daughter, Melissa, have moved in and converted the place to a guesthouse, where Maxie and Paul are now checked in for an eternity and ready to solve any case that comes their way - or at least spook the guests (who love it). Alison’s got a lot on her plate at the moment, however, so when Paul discovers the 300-year-old ghost of a small boy in the house, he decides not to involve her in the case.

too racist to finish
Revisado: 10-09-20
I was interested in the idea of this short story from pov of another character but the introduction of the "native" child ghost who had seen two hundred years pass, references Taylor Swift but speaks in the halting Tonto-esque one syllable and grammar hopscotch was too painful to finish.

Concerned that technology is about to chase mythological creatures out into the open (how long can Sasquatch stay hidden from Google maps?), the League for Interspecies Cooperation is sending Jillian to Louisiana on a fact-finding mission. While the League hopes to hold on to secrecy for a little bit longer, they're preparing for the worst in terms of human reactions. They need a plan, so they look to Mystic Bayou, a tiny town hidden in the swamp where humans and supernatural residents have been living in harmony for generations.

Need more stars!
Revisado: 01-05-20
This book is so good I want to subtract one star from all previous reviews to illustrate how it is in a class of its own. Smart, funny writing. Even disposable exposition characters are nuanced and hilarious. The writing is luxurious and the humor well-timed. I'd praise it more but I'm in a hurry to start the next in mystic bayou series.

Skillful, lyrical, compelling
Revisado: 01-01-20
This send up of minstral shows relies as much on intricate poetics as masterful performances. By focusing on (and weaving) the narratives of exploited and enslaved artists with their exploiters/enslavers (and apologists), history opens to the listener like a fist unclenching; fingers beckoning.
Listening to the audiobook is like having front row seats at a Broadway. Engaging. Immersive.

Valkyrie mythos victorious!
Revisado: 12-28-19
The physical depiction of the Valkyrie's body magic was a lovely surprise. Narrator is consistent delight in making voices of characters (including 5: English brothers and their valets) easy to distinguish. The narrator/voice actor also does distinctions to the lovely heroines that make reoccuring characters from previous novels instantly and joyously recognizable. The author's cat love had a mischievous twist in this tale.
