Historia
Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast trilogy is widely acknowledged to be, as Robertson Davies pronounced, "a classic of our age." In these extraordinary novels, Peake created a world where all is like a dream - lush, fantastical, and vivid. Yet it was incomplete. Parkinson's disease took Peake's life in 1968, depriving his fans of the fourth and final volume of the series, Titus Awakes except for a few tantalizing pages, after which his writing became indecipherable. Or so it seemed....

Don't bother
Revisado: 05-02-24
a continuation of the last novel, where Titus is a nihilist who cares about nothing, not himself, not other people, not contributing to the world, he doesn't even care about his dog, he drifts aimlessly and doesn't do anything that really captured my interest
in the first section of this book he randomly starts living with a family, sleeps with the lady, then when she has his baby he's like ugh I don't want to be involved with this, and literally runs away in the middle of the night after living with them for a year
the author keeps talking about how Titus doesn't care about anything. it's really hard to have any enjoyment of a character who doesn't have motivation. it reads like a teenage boy fantasy of having no responsibilities and still getting laid by one dimensional female characters. after he fathered a child and ran away in the middle of the night and named his dog "dog" so he didn't have to have feelings about it, I couldn't finish the second half of the book. really not anything like the beginning of the series, very very disappointing. again, I am embarrassed that an adult man wrote this book.
the language of the writing itself is good, but the characters and the plot are just awful

Historia
Enter the fantastical world of Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast Trilogy, one of the undisputed fantasy classics of all time. Novelist C.S. Lewis called Peake's books "actual additions to life; they give, like certain rare dreams, sensations we never had before, and enlarge our conception of the range of possible experience."

rich boy who doesn't care about anything has women take care of him
Revisado: 05-02-24
Really lost the plot with this one. Titus decides to run away from home and be homeless, he doesn't care about anything, have any motivation other than not wanting to do things, and not wanting to be around people. Yet beautiful rich women continue to be obsessed with him and invite him, who they believe is a homeless begger, to live in their mansions. After a while he gets tired of banging them and runs away again. I'm embarrassed that an adult wrote this.

could have been better
Revisado: 06-27-19
after much contemplation I think this was missing two things. one, the humor that offsets the disturbing nature of excellent horror. two, a creative ending - there should have been either a happy ending or a terrible one, but there was neither. further, I was so annoyed by the characters' decision making process through so much of the book. so many "why are you doing that???" moments like a bad horror movie

Historia
Welcome to Ringworld, an intermediate step between Dyson Spheres and planets. The gravitational force created by a rotation on its axis of 770 miles per second means no need for a roof. Walls 1,000 miles high at each rim will let in the sun and prevent much air from escaping. Larry Niven's novel, Ringworld, is the winner of the 1970 Hugo Award for Best Novel, the 1970 Nebula Award for Best Novel, and the 1972 Ditmars, an Australian award for Best International Science Fiction.

Ridiculously, unbearably sexist
Revisado: 01-23-18
If I had a dollar for every time the only female character was portrayed as sexual, childlike, ignorant, hysterical, and/or confused, I'd have about $100. For every time she contributed to the mission as something other than a sexual accessory, maybe $3. The male characters were not portrayed like this. Oh also he invented not one but two alien races with a male gender and a NON-SENTIENT female gender used only for reproduction. Extremely grating sexism ruined the story for me.

China Miéville doesn’t follow trends, he sets them. Relentlessly pushing his own boundaries as a writer - and in the process expanding the boundaries of the entire field - with Embassytown, Miéville has crafted an extraordinary novel that is not only a moving personal drama but a gripping adventure of alien contact and war. In the far future, humans have colonized a distant planet, home to sentient beings famed for a language unique in the universe, one that only a few altered human ambassadors can speak....

I thought the narrator's tone was perfect for the alien story. Best scifi I've read in a while.

i was annoyed by narration
Revisado: 12-12-17
Maybe I'm spoiled since the previous audio book I listened to used 3 different narrators for the 3 different characters. I found it incredibly grating to listen to one woman try to do all the accents and genders.
Dropping her voice super low for the men, Cockney british, the Russian accent was real bad... ugh. Just hire more actors. It's not like Neal Stephenson books aren't popular enough to be worth it.
the narrator sounded good when not doing accents!
the story itself is fine, I don't need to say what everyone else did already
