Not up to par for Binchy

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 07-20-07

Although Binchy delivers lots of engaging characters in this book, it's really more of a collection of short stories than a novel. Obviously, the well in Whitethorn woods is the thread that loosely binds the characters together. She presents the stories in a chain -- one character's story leads to the next character's story, but often, those characters are not brought together. We see the link between the characters because we saw it from each character's perspective, but we didn't see them together. (This is hard to explain!) An interesting way to develop characters, but I would have loved it had she integrated the characters at some point in the story.

Letters of a Woman Homesteader Audiolibro Por Elinore Pruitt Stewart arte de portada

Interesting but not riveting

This book provided lots of interesting insights into life in the West in the early 1900s. However, the reading was lackluster. A more mature sounding and expressive reader would have greatly improved this book.

Wow! Provides a fascinating look into the dangerous, exhausting, and frustrating world of a war correspondent. After this listen, I became much more interested in keeping tabs on what's going on in Iraq. Was so depressing to hear that many of Garrels' predictions and those of her guide (can't believe I can't recall his name - has been almost two mos. since I listened to this book) came to be. I still wonder why her guide took the risks he did, making it possible for her to survive and even thrive in a very hostile environment. Highly recommend this book -- even for those who have only a marginal interest in politics and war. You won't be disappointed, regardless of what you think of the war in Iraq.

Sneaky Pie Brown & Her Insights

A delightful listen! At first I found the running commentary re: the animals' thoughts a bit tedious and distracting but it didn't take long to be sucked into the plot. Once that happened, I was no longer conscious of the technique. Loved the bickering and banter among the animals. Lots of rich ironic twists in this plot. Lots of interesting characters. Loved Harry, the heroine. Will read (listen to) more by this author.

Disappointing but not a total waste

I listened to & loved Bella Tuscany & Under the Tuscan Sun. Looked forward to Frances' next book. This was not nearly as engaging & entertaining as the other two. Had it not been for Frances' voice & accent (I like) & the promise of hearing her husband Ed (I like)I would have bailed out. Fortunately I did not. I thoroughly enjoyed the last 1/3 of the book. Lots of interesting info. & insights into Tuscan food, culture, & hospitality.
