Historia
In Men Explain Things to Me, Rebecca Solnit takes on the conversations between men who wrongly assume they know things and wrongly assume women don't. The ultimate problem, she shows in her comic, scathing essay, is female self-doubt and the silencing of women. Rebecca Solnit is the author of fourteen books about civil society, popular power, uprisings, art, environment, place, pleasure, politics, hope, and memory, most recently The Faraway Nearby, a book on empathy and storytelling.

I come from an evangelical household and was a Republican. I have left both far behind but you don’t know what you don’t know. So here I am finding out. I am so grateful I found this book. I have a lot to think about and unlearn it is sometimes overwhelming.

Historia
From the author of the Sunday Times best seller Cocaine Nights comes an unnerving tale of life in a modern tower block running out of control. Within the concealing walls of an elegant 40-storey tower block, the affluent tenants are hell-bent on an orgy of destruction. Cocktail parties degenerate into marauding attacks on 'enemy' floors, and the once-luxurious amenities become an arena for riots and technological mayhem.

I have listened to this book a few times and it never disappoints. Societal collapse in a microcosm brought about by economic classism and the loss of a few modern comforts.

Historia
First published in 1962, J.G. Ballard’s mesmerizing and ferociously imaginative novel not only gained him widespread critical acclaim but also established his reputation as one of the finest writers of a generation. The Drowned World imagines a terrifying world in which global warming has melted the ice caps and primordial jungles have overrun a tropical London. Set during the year 2145, this novel follows biologist Dr. Robert Kearns and his team of scientists as they confront a cityscape in which nature is on the rampage and giant lizards, dragonflies, and insects fiercely compete for domination.

Didn’t live up to the hype for me
Revisado: 05-14-24
A good post apocalypse short story. I just didn’t take away anything new or groundbreaking. Maybe it’s because I am reading it in 2024 not the time it was written. Maybe it’s because something similar to this story is so ingrained as a nice version of the probable future.

In the darkness of a vast cave system, cut off from the world for millennia, blind creatures hunt by sound. Then there is light, there are voices, and they feed. Now, it is her family's only chance of survival. They must leave their home, shun others, and find a remote haven where they can sit out the plague. But will it ever end? And what kind of world will be left?

Revisado: 05-13-24
Just like a lot of other reviews it feels like a good story that just kind of stops in the middle. What was there was good. I would read more if there were a part 2.

Not what I expected at all.
Revisado: 05-10-24
This was recommended as a post apocalypse story. There is a disaster of sorts but it is an afterthought. It was a 6th grade romance. I kept waiting for something to pull it together but it never happened.

Amazing story. The desperation in survival can lead anywhere from the depraved to sharing of what little there is to share. Who can be trusted.

Soon, they return from the grave, and ask for blood. And with blood, they stop being dead. They continue to remain the children they once were, but only for a short time, as they need more blood to live. The average human body holds 10 pints of blood, so the inevitable question for parents everywhere becomes: How far would you go to bring your child back?

I thought this story could have been expanded upon. Maybe it leaves room for more? Seems more like a prequel to the main story. The subject was a new way to tell a fun a familiar tale.

Historia
In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: They become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place.... The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease.

The ending just wasn’t for me. Somewhere around the half way mark things slowed down and became disappointing. The closer to the end it got the it only got more disappointing and boring. It wasn’t for me. But give it a go it might be for you.

I love the stories but wish there was a complete collection. Also the narrator is a bit of a ham. A bit over the top for me but some might enjoy his enthusiasm.
