Historia
Cowpunchers, Indians and horses are the heroes and villains of these tales from the early days of Montana and Wyoming, with bear and buffalo also making an appearance. The author's philosophy on such varying topics as marriage, whisky and just staying alive will be of interest to all, cowboy fan or not. Charles M. Russell moved to Montana at the age of 15 and lived there for the rest of his life. 'In the spring I wrangled horses, in the fall I herded beef. I worked for the big outfits and always held my job.'

Interesting tales of the West before, during and after it's development. Some tales are tall tales but still have an authenticity of life in the changing West.

Historia
Pete Townshend is one of the great figures in rock ‘n’ roll history. For almost 60 years, The Who have balanced the physical and the spiritual with introspective lyrics and inspirational music. But there is a part of Townshend’s story—and The Who’s—that has not been examined. These are his Words + Music. In the Audible Original Pete Townshend: Somebody Saved Me, the songwriter takes us through the period between the 1978 death of Who drummer Keith Moon and the 2002 loss of bassist John Entwistle.

Historia
Perhaps England’s greatest literary family. To find one brilliant novelist in a family is extremely rare. But two? Three?
The Brontë sisters, Charlotte, Emily Jane and Anne, together with their brother Patrick, are famed throughout the world. And amongst their many talents was poetry. Of course, being Brontë’s, they were rather good at that too.

Good short story, excellent acting
Revisado: 04-17-25
The story and acting was very engaging. Not five stars for the story because Victoria was too over-the-top obnoxious several times. This is no fault of the actress. It is the way the character was written. The others didn't need to grovel and apologize to her, not only because she was wrong but because she exhibited horrible behavior.

tedious, long-winded effort to sound intelligent
Revisado: 12-09-24
First, the narrator is very good. Second, the title is awesome. Third, the idea has great potential. I believe it could be a great story. All that said, it was very disappointing. The opening was intriguing, but it went downhill from there, or rather it went nowhere. Three-quarters of the book could be eliminated without hurting the story. Mostly, it is a tedious, long-winded story that attempts to sound scientifically intelligent.

Historia
Deep within hostile Reeh Empire space, the UFS Phoenix is hunting another AI queen. This one is named Chion, and she has been installed at the heart of Reeh Empire power, enslaved against her will, for the past 8,000 years. Within her vast knowledge lies the most intimate data on Nia, the deepynine queen now threatening humanity's very existence. Freeing Chion could be the key to beating Nia and saving humanity. But Phoenix's allied drysine queen, Styx, and Chion's AI former sidekick, Shali, both want Chion for their own purposes.

interesting thoughts on AI and sentience
Revisado: 11-04-24
The Spiral Wars series continues to be a great story. John Lee provides excellent narration as always. Though the entire series contemplates the boundaries of AI, sentience, and free will I found book 8 stimulating me to give it more thought. Is Styx nothing more than the grandest probability machine? Can AI have consciousness and feelings, such as Shali appears to have or appears to desire? Are humans nothing more than biological programs that evolved from non-living matter to living matter by mindless, materialistic, random processes? If that is the case, then is there good and bad, right and wrong? What does it matter if Styx takes over the universe? What does it matter if terrorists or communists subject humanity to tyranny? But everyone knows it matters. What does that suggest? Even Styx makes decisions and judgements based on its programming of what is good and bad. There must be a source of what is the measure of a best outcome. There is much food for thought within this great sci-fi series.

Historia
Nearly six hundred years ago, a short, genial, cannily alert man in his late 30s took a very old manuscript off a library shelf, saw with excitement what he had discovered, and ordered that it be copied. That book was the last surviving manuscript of an ancient Roman philosophical epic by Lucretius—a beautiful poem containing the most dangerous ideas: that the universe functioned without the aid of gods, that religious fear was damaging to human life, and that matter was made up of very small particles.

Greenblatt is a storyteller, not a historian
Revisado: 06-12-24
I enjoyed listening to The Swerve. Ballerini's narration is excellent. Most of the book is interesting as a story, and were it simply a story I would have given it 5 stars. If you can enjoy it as a story, there are things to learn, ideas to explore, starting points for research. Just don't take it at its word as history because as such it fails miserably. As a history book it could have been less than half it's length. But through storytelling, Greenblatt extends it with numerous excursions into the psyche of many individuals, professing to know what they thought, how they thought, postulating they likely would have encountered this or done that. Basically he conjures too much from a note, a document, an event or perhaps his preconceptions of the time periods, his adoration of scholars, Epicurus, Lucretius, or disdain for anything religious. Maybe he is projecting himself into their thoughts and the story. He also misrepresents the time periods by exclusion and inclusion of only that which is necessary to make his story cohesive. He clearly has an agenda, to proclaim the wonders of Epicureanism. If this is representative of Greenblatt's New Historicism, then he exposes the shortcomings of this literary theory.

Historia
Bradbury's Mars is a place of hope, dreams, and metaphor - of crystal pillars and fossil seas - where a fine dust settles on the great, empty cities of a silently destroyed civilization. It is here the invaders have come to despoil and commercialize, to grow and to learn - first a trickle, then a torrent, rushing from a world with no future toward a promise of tomorrow. The Earthman conquers Mars...and then is conquered by it, lulled by dangerous lies of comfort and familiarity, and enchanted by the lingering glamour of an ancient, mysterious native race.

Upon the ancient drysine moon/city of Defiance, the UFS Phoenix is being rebuilt, but her crew cannot do so in peace. Parren factions jostle for control of not only Defiance, but of the drysine data-core that Phoenix won at such an awful price. But the parren do not lay sole claim to that ancient knowledge, and within the bowels of the machine-city, something long-dead is awakening. While aliens battle, Captain Debogande struggles to decide his next step. Human emissaries beckon him home, while a terrible new threat drives him toward the far edge of Spiral space.
