As I listened to the book, I kept thinking that I had missed a part. I kept having to rewind to make sure that I didn’t skip ahead. I found myself not knowing what was happening. One moment the characters are in one place talking and the next line, the author has skipped ahead to another day in another place without any warning, transition or anything. It was not pleasant for me. I feel like she should have elaborated more on the scene that was already playing out and, poof, she was done and focusing on another scene.

There is no development of the story, the reader does not see how the characters fall in love. And the stubbornness of everyone hiding their supernatural nature from
One another was ridiculous. And since when are the Ellingham’s unreasonable and don’t take into consideration the needs of their citizens? Luna is in physical pain because she cannot safely shift into her mermaid form because she is trying not to be seen by humans and she needs the lake. I don’t see how the Ellinghams would just dismiss this. Honestly, I really dislike the way that Kristen Painter’s beautifully and thoughtfully created town and stories have been warped by this author.

I was so disappointed since I loved Ms. Armstrong’s other books. This was so dull and it seemed like it was never going to end.

The story dragged on and was just never exciting. The narrator made the story even worse. She seemed to just drag on reading like she had to get through the book. No passion, no inflection no life really.

Just a terrible “read” all around.

The other books in this series have made me laugh out loud and are very enjoyable and cute overall. This was a dud, unfortunately.

What a wonderful love story! So nicely done too. Sad moments, happy moments and happy endings of course. The story just came together and flowed perfectly. Narration was on point as always.

Good story but it seems to be falling apart a little. Still entertaining. My issue with the narration is all the screaming. It hurts my ears and seems unnecessary. I understand the need to sound excited or angry but it doesn’t have to be through yelling. Her voice is so shrill too when she does it and she does it often. It’s very uncomfortable for an audiobook. The character of Gramm is great and I do think I would enjoy her more if her lines were delivered in a normal volume. Even though the story mentions that Gramm tends to be loud, the narrator is doing a disservice to this character, it’s too exaggerated.

As far as the story, it’s still interesting because it has so many twists. However, a lot of the plot developments and “rules” of this immortal community seem to be made up on the spur of the moment without really backing them up and for all their fierceness these immortals seem to be pretty helpless and uninformed when other beings mess with them.

If the characters hadn’t been so insanely irritating and annoying, the story might have worked. Dresden blames himself for everything that happens regardless of whether or not it’s his fault. Dresden and Murphy’s interactions are irritating at best. She jumps to conclusions all the time and I just don’t feel the rapport, the friendship. I don’t even see why she consults Dresden in the first place, it’s a horrible relationship, gives me a headache. I loved James Marsters in Buffy and then in Angel so I thought I would enjoy his narration. And when he is narrating he does a great job with the tones and the voices etc but what’s with the deep breathing and sighing and all his sound effects? He does them all very loud and straight into the microphone. I tried to ignore it but sometimes it was just way too much.

Overall, I tried to like the story and get into the books. I finished the first book not liking it at all but hoping it got better so I went on to book two. I couldn’t finish this book. I realized I let it run and wasn’t even listening anymore. It’s a shame because it sounds like an interesting and fun magical world but the characters just don’t do it for me.

I’ve listened to all the stories in this series and I don’t recall ever having such a bad experience with the narration even though it’s the same narrator. She gave Veritas the WORST voice especially when she was excited about something. During the last scene with Dagon, Veritas turned into this whiny little thing. It was horrible to listen to. Made the story very unpleasant for me. Even when she was mad, she sounded more whiny and annoying than mad. The story was good, love Ian as always.

The love story is frustrating. Lily flies off the handle for no reason and seriously overreacts. The story just seems to exaggerate the reason for their disagreement. It’s actually really annoying

I kept waiting for something interesting to happen. Such a boring generic story. Seems very childish and silly for a character who is a professional. Just awful... couldn’t stop cringing.
