Historia
Tender at the Bone is the story of a life determined, enhanced, and defined in equal measure by unforgettable people, the love of tales well-told, and a passion for food. In other words, the stuff of the best literature. The journey begins with Reichl's mother, the notorious food-poisoner known forevermore as the Queen of Mold, and moves on to the fabled Mrs. Peavey, one-time Baltimore socialite millionairess, and, for a brief but poignant moment, retained as Reichl's maid.

Good, not great
Revisado: 06-03-23
This was the third cooking book I read in a row and that was probably one too many. But Anne Patchett recommended it so I listened. The popularity of Lessons in Chemistry still mystifies me but I loved Nora Efron's Heartburn. This book was like sitting with a friend talking on a Saturday afternoon when you're bored. The stories are interesting enough but not compelling. The author/ narrator often fell into a monotone that could have used some animation. Also for the readers who found funny parts I wish you could point them out to me. I did not crack a smile. And many sad parts about her family dynamics were too depressing.
But I'm clearly in the minority. It's just wasn't for me.

Historia
Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.

I wish the people raving about LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY would read HEARTBURN to get a taste of what excellent writing and story telling is. Nora Ephron has a wonderful way of story telling without having her characters preach and lecture. Meryl Streep makes our main characters human and vulnerable. Highly recommend this book.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Impressive first novel, but I didn't love it
Revisado: 02-20-23
This novel is entertaining, but is very preachy. I felt like the author wanted to have a character say everything the author didn't have another vehicle to express it, but I didn't appreciate having to tolerate throughout the novel. I liked to development of the dog's character but think it belongs in a children's book. I literally never laughed and was surprised to hear other reviewers thought this novel had funny moments. And the complaint about the mispronunciation of Jack LaLanne seems petty, but bugged me as well - took me right out of the story every time. I wish I had spent the 12 hours listening to a better novel, but it was good enough to finish.

Historia
Jim Thorpe rose to world fame as a mythic talent who excelled at every sport. Most famously, he won gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. A member of the Sac and Fox Nation, he was an All-American football player at the Carlisle Indian School, the star of the first class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and played major league baseball for John McGraw’s New York Giants. Even in a golden age of sports celebrities, he was one of a kind.

Wonderfully researched history of the life of the great Jim Thorpe. It is also a history of westward expansion, Native American history, sports history, collegiate sports history, racism, transportation throughout the United States, international relations, the Titanic gets a shout out - this book has something for everyone. The author did an excellent job with sensitive and complicated topics as seen looking back through the decades.

There is no love lost between the president of the United States and Ellen Adams, his new secretary of state. But it’s a canny move on the part of the president. Great sunmer novel
Revisado: 08-07-22
Well written, imaginative, mystery/thriller. I enjoyed the character and the story. I wish the back story of the Secretary of State came more into play. Why make her a media mogul and then not have any of her backstory play into the plot? But other than wondering that I enjoyed the novel.

Historia
Edwin St. Andrew is eighteen years old when he crosses the Atlantic by steamship, exiled from polite society following an ill-conceived diatribe at a dinner party. He enters the forest, spellbound by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and suddenly hears the notes of a violin echoing in an airship terminal—an experience that shocks him to his core.

Very disappointed - cannot recommend
Revisado: 07-17-22
I did not enjoy this book. I think some authors should write a few short stories, if they have a kernel of inspiration. I feel like a few short stories were in the author's head, and she tried to tie them together with an uninspired, unconvincing time travel story. Time travel stories, especially if the traveler can control what time they travel too, are usually unsatisfying, because the obvious answer is "go further back in time and stop whatever the problem is." Fully agree with the comments that the characters are not interesting, Unique names do not an interesting character make. I loved STATION ELEVEN but this doesn't even come close. All the readers were excellent. I would not have cast one of them for their part of the story, but otherwise well done.
