I think there was a word count goal
Revisado: 01-05-24
The author loops and loops the story. The points are over explained or just explained in a circle.
I like the narrator's voice but she doesn't differentiate between the characters. I honestly can't tell her male from female characters; this is so confusing.
I tried for many hours to follow this and it just isn't worth my time.

Hello stranger, my name is Tal, and I’m not an adventurer—those people are crazy. I’m just a sorcerer who is masquerading as a wizard. Oh, and I’m searching for answers about my parents’ mysterious deaths. Also monsters and other foes seem to show up wherever I go. All right, I see it. My new traveling companions are seasoned adventurers and are teaching me their ways—or at least they were before something happened to Time.

So much story packed into this book!
Revisado: 07-31-23
The re-listen value is definitely there! The world building is phenomenal, extensive, and detailed. The character descriptions and personalities are equally extraordinary and vivid.
The story is creative and very interesting. I can't wait to see what Peter J. Lee writes next! 👏👏
Travis Baldree does a wonderful job at creating individual characters, that fit their descriptions, in his performance. This is money or credits well spent!

This Psych 312 assignment just might send me off the deep end. Determining whether love at first sight really exists with Robbie Moravian as my project partner of all people? He’s the sappiest man alive, so upbeat I could scream, and clearly rooting for happy endings at every turn. How does he not learn from experience considering our own meet-cute last semester almost got us expelled? But we both need to pass this course to graduate. So we’re interviewing five random couples about their meet-cutes and relationships and spending all this time together. Which is certainly...educational.

Meh.... nonsensical
Revisado: 03-03-23
I get romantic comedies are fake but this didn't make much sense. It was too cutesie and just didn't work. The big reveal wasn't great. I recommend all of her other stories before this one. I didn't get blown away by any of the characters. The situations weren't plausible. Also the teens were poorly written and should have been called 10-12. I think this was all gimicy and worth moving pass.... good news is it is short!
The main 2 voice actors did great. The side ones were less good; teens sounded way younger than age assigned.
If you have plus and get this for free.... maybe listen to it. If you have to pay for it, then you should skip it.

Ages ago, sorcerers of unmatched power sundered a world into four realms—sky, stone, fire, and water—then vanished. Over time, magicians learned to work spells only in their own realms and forgot the others. Now only the few who have survived the Labyrinth and crossed the Death Gate know of the presence of all four realms—and even they have yet to unravel the mysteries of their severed world. . . .

This series is sooooo good, I'm glad to hear it!
Revisado: 02-19-23
This classic series is finally making it to audiobooks and with the same narrator! The narrator does well.... you can tell which charater speaks and that's wonderfully done. I didn't invision some of those voices with the characters... he really missed it with Alfred. Not to say this is annoying; this is beautifully done.
You will enjoy it and it helps to stay near the pdf files on the pc (click "library, scroll to Dragon Wing and see the PDF files to the right). I'm glad the maps and diagrams are included as they helped in the paperback.
It is super good that this series will become audiobooks to widen the audience to such a wonderful series. Welcome and enjoy the ride.

When Finlay Ashowan joins the staff of the King and Queen of Daxaria, he’s an enigma. No one knows where he comes from or how he came to be where he is, which suits Fin just fine. He’s satisfied simply serving as the royal cook, keeping nosy passersby out of his kitchen, and concocting some truly uncanny meals. But Fin’s secret identity doesn’t stay hidden for long. After all, it’s not every day a house witch and his kitten familiar, Kraken, take to meddling in imperial affairs.

Humor can be subjective but oh this one is brilliant. The story was respectful, intriguing, entertaining, funny and just awesome. I'm no fan of the cat, but he hasn't taken over. I can't wait to see where the author leads!
The narrator only had me a bit lost on Ruby, but there enough clues to state it is her. I will seek out books he reads, Matthew Wolf is definitely talented. He read the book beautifully and emotions were delivered.

Alexander and his growing legion have managed to escape Nova Roma and, more importantly, learned that the rest of the world may not be as ravaged by monsters as they had all thought. Join them as they set sail for ancient Venice, the Queen of the Adriatic, to try to learn more about the wider world outside Nova Roma. Along the way, they'll encounter a growing plague of deadly pirates, deceitful old merchant families out to quash any new competitors in the region, mysterious new allies, and much more.

The editor needs to be fired...
Revisado: 10-27-22
I had a love for the series but I don't plan to continue after this. The writing has become so bad I keep picturing a high school writing assignment. I want Mathews to take me through his world and tell me of Alexander's journey. I worry that maybe he is distracted or rushing his work through? I just don't know what happened.
The start of the book tries to rewrite rules established in book 1. Moves such as this make it hard for me as a reader to follow the journey. Isobella doesn't drain when summoned. I think this was a poor choice, it just becomes a challenge for me to follow the story if nothing is a rule. The addition of corruption was a smoother change and I think it was done well.
The problem with rewriting the rules established from book 1 is losing your audience. I get he did this to rebalance for Isobella and plan for her. Mathews removed the phase beast to keep Alexander in check (can't be too powerful) but then allow her to not be a drain on him? I get that he is a hard character to balance but I don't know if you tried. Does he need others? I think book 1 had him making friends and relying on them to help him. This book has him reigning over people but not really needing them.
This book takes a paragraph to explain anything. It summaries a topic then goes back into finer detail on EVERY subject. It lists all the features then just loops back on itself. The story just turns in these small circles of restating. In example, if you can't notice the helmet until you see your reflection, then you won't feel it retract. This is just one of many.
More reasons why the editor should be fired:
If Alexander wants to head to Carthage and leave the forest so very badly, why does it he keep going back to hunt or hunt every beast in the forest? You told me he was leaving, then you kept having him stay.
Misuse or overused:
- The phrase "as best as I could" is overused. I do not believe an AI would need to rely so heavily on this but Alexander certainly did live off of it.
- Viscera from the rhino battle.... viscera doesn't come from the head, this word is a favored word in this book but it is misused, see chapter 14.
- Demure - the old woman isn't demure if she shows up and tells you to go buy the fancy clothes.
- "Monsters as you call them" - everyone calls them; all people
- By saying "colors and colors" the description is actually lacking. The Tilly rooms are poorly described. I found the descriptions lacking.
- "Trust over them and their people" - There isn't really a difference between the two; this doesn't make sense.
- 'Pouncing sharks' - I'm not sure I can continue.
- The subject is often repeated within the same sentence. This is painful to listen too and definitely not needed. I didn't forget the subject midsentence.
Too much speculation and not enough action. More time is thought to theory1 or there's theory 2, but then maybe theory 3. This system of storytelling floods the work, but battles are lumped together. The fights are so briefly mentioned. Alexander keeps changing classes too, he's just a sponge at this point.
