It was alright
Revisado: 08-11-23
I have been struggling with this book since I received a free review copy 10 days ago. For reference, I’ve finished single Wandering Inn books in just a few days, so I usually finish books quite quickly. This is an outlier for me.
The story had a lot of potential with the world and background. I liked the unique races and the human/fika dynamic; however, the main character really ruined it for me. I felt like he had no depth, and nothing interesting to make me care about him. His reaction to everything felt very unrealistic, too. I got really excited at first being introduced to this world because it felt well thought out and definitely unique from anything else I’d heard, but I just couldn’t finish the book, one reason being that the main character drove me crazy.
The other reason I struggled was because of Matt Hicks’ narration. Erin did very well, and I enjoyed her voices a lot, but Matt’s voices felt like they didn’t shift in tone for different situations, and half of the voices for fika characters were done in this weird deep whisper voice (like wanna be asmr or something???) which didn’t sound good and made me have to constantly rewind and turn the volume up and down (and also cringe) which is unfortunate, because maybe I could have made it further if the narration was a bit better.
I think the book definitely has potential. The crafting system and race dynamics are very interesting, and I liked the world building. Do give it a chance! And perhaps it gets better further in, maybe you can find out.

Enjoyable, Action-Packed Read
Revisado: 04-06-23
As the title states, this book is full of as much excitement and action as the first book! There is not a ton of world building, however, for a straightforward story like this one it’s not really needed. The main character does develop a lot more in this second book than he does in the first which is fantastic! Though I feel like other characters could have been more fleshed out - I would have liked to see more depth with some of them!
This is the first pirate/sea based book I’ve ever read and the use of detail when it comes to the language and tools needed for running a ship really helped me feel immersed in the story! Will definitely be looking for more pirate-themed books now! I will say though, I think both of these books would have probably done best as one novel, rather than two. The split seemed unnecessary and clunky.
One, honestly minor, thing that bothered me from the start is referring to Shaw, a griffon, as a “drake.” Unless this is specific to the book’s universe then aren’t these two different races? Again, minor, but it certainly threw me off.
I will say the voice actors in this book got a lot better! It was a challenge for me to listen through the first book simply for the narration. Everyone had the same voice and intonations in every scenario. This book was a HUGE improvement and I ended it feeling impressed by the growth and I ended up really enjoying both of them!

Historia
The Wandering Inn has a princess who solves problems rather than creates them, and her name is Lyonette. Yet what happens when the innkeeper returns to manage her inn? Lyonette must learn to be a good employee rather than manage everything herself, and sharing power is never easy.... Nor is it ever simple in war, but that is where Geneva Scala remains. In bloodier and increasingly brutal battlefields, The Last Light of Baleros is now growing in fame, but there is no future there.

I really enjoyed this one!
Revisado: 03-29-23
First of all, incredible performance by Andrea, as always!
As others have said, the first several chapters are centered around the King of Destruction, and it’s not my favorite part either. I do believe it will become relevant in later books though so I didn’t skip ahead, rather, I put it at a quicker speed so I could get the information and get to the parts that excited me the most.
I saw some reviews complaining about the book swapping perspectives too much, but I think this one did well with it. The previous book jumped a lot but I felt that this one focused several enough chapters on each section that it felt better organized.
I know most people hate Ryoka, and I get it, but I really loved her in this book! I really dislike Ryoka, but I love her character as a part of the book. The ending focused on her a bit more than other characters and I was gritting my teeth and couldn’t sit still because of how things were going.I was anxious, angry, and scared for the characters. It was a really good ending in my opinion and I’m so excited to start reading the next book!

Very Interesting Read
Revisado: 03-18-23
I don’t remember buying this book, it just showed up in my library one day and I decided to give the mystery book a shot, and I’m so glad I did!
I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this book. The pacing felt slow but just the right amount. I desperately wanted to know the secrets that were being kept so far out of reach from me, that when they did reveal themselves I was definitely surprised! I liked the way that the mental illness was portrayed in the book. It felt respectful, raw, and real.
I wish there was more that took place on this mysterious planet! I tried the sequel but haven’t gotten far into it as it starts back on earth. Maybe I should look more at what the other books are like, but even as a complete standalone, Planetfall is very good!

Who would have guessed that? When these cruel gods shuffled Earth like a deck of cards, nothing was in the same place anymore. Monsters, dungeons, and magical items appear scattered across the globe. And suddenly, everyone has access to a new, strange magical card system that gives them magical powers.

Enjoyable, but should have been two books
Revisado: 03-18-23
I really enjoyed both halves of this book (the first, more “slice of life” half being my favorite), but the transition between the two was so abrupt and I felt like the two should have been their own separate things. Jake becomes almost unbearable towards the end for me, whereas his character seemed humble and charming towards the beginning. I can understand why the character changed so much, I just wish we had more of that first part of the book. That being said, I am anxiously waiting for book two! I still very much enjoyed the story towards the end and will read the sequel as soon as it’s released!

Best book I’ve read in years
Revisado: 09-04-22
This is one of the best books I’ve ever read, and the best this year. The atmosphere is the perfect eerie feeling to kick off this fall, and the writing is absolutely wonderful. Probably my favorite part of this book is the muteness of the main character. It makes everything feel… quiet. You’re listening to the main character’s thoughts rather than dialogue, and it creates such a unique feeling and world. If I were to recommend any book to someone it would be this one. It’s a quick and easy weekend read with a beautifully written story that keeps you listening.
