Historia
One evening in 2009, April Balascio was searching online, as she had been every night, for unsolved murders in the towns her family had lived growing up, when she stumbled across the latest investigations into the “Sweetheart Murders” cold case. All at once, the buried memories of her father’s dark history were awakened, and she knew she had to take action. She picked up the phone to call a detective and the rest is infamous true crime history. In her unflinching memoir, Balascio bravely reveals an astonishing tale of a lifetime of manipulation, unexplained upheavals, and silent fear.

Balascio’s voice adds authenticity
Revisado: 12-10-24
I’m always cautious when the author narrates their own book but April Belascio’s voice actually adds to the book’s authenticity.
If I were curating a book list for new teachers, I’d add this. As I was listening, I recalled some students who left suddenly with no forwarding address. April’s willingness to recall painful events gives us insight into the lives of children whose parents neglect and abuse them.
I really appreciated April’s ability to explain how she continued to love her complicit mother because she, too, was a victim.
Thank you, April Balascio.

Historia
By day, 17-year-old Jo Kuan works as a lady's maid for the cruel daughter of one of the wealthiest men in Atlanta. But by night, Jo moonlights as the pseudonymous author of a newspaper advice column for the genteel Southern lady, "Dear Miss Sweetie". When her column becomes wildly popular, she uses the power of the pen to address some of society's ills, but she's not prepared for the backlash that follows when her column challenges fixed ideas about race and gender.

Loved the character development
Revisado: 09-03-24
Loved the character development and the story. The strength and resilience of the main character is refreshing.
Compelling story well told. Too bad the narration and story are greatly affected by the lack of an adequate sound engineer. I was CONSTANTLY turning the volume up or down.
If you are not listening through hearing sides or ear buds, you may be ok. It was excruciating listening through my state of the art hearing aides.

Historia
Patric Gagne realized she made others uncomfortable before she started kindergarten. Something about her caused people to react in a way she didn’t understand. She suspected it was because she didn’t feel things the way other kids did. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy eluded her. For the most part, she felt nothing. And she didn’t like the way that “nothing” felt.

Grabbed me
Revisado: 04-07-24
Ashley Elston grabbed my attention and never let go. I found the whole premise intriguing because the political party whose symbol is a pachyderm used my husband to infiltrate the other political party in CA. He says he learned those liberals were actually caring people who didn’t have horns. He eventually, years later, joined them. This happened when he was still a teenager.
That said, this book is NOT political. When you read it you will realize how my husband’s story is relevant to the subject.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

This book weaves in and out like a fine tapestry. The characters are human. I actually may read this book again and I very rarely do that.

It is a lovely summary of the books and the lives of the Herriot family. I thoroughly enjoyed reviewing the stories and learning new facts that tie them all together,

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.
