Surprising series entry

This slim volume is one of the more surprising entries in the Splatter Western series. It starts off firmly in Stagecoach territory. The 1939 movie, based on the Ernest Haycox story "The Stage to Lordsburg", has one of the most influential set-ups of the 20th, a group of disparate strangers forced together as traveling companions, facing an external force. Great characters, great interactions, and a build up before all hell breaks loose.

Mouth Full of Ashes tips its hand pretty early as a love letter to The Lost Boys. This was enjoyable but by sticking so close to its influence some of the reveals and plot points don't come as a surprise. If you love The Lost Boys you'll like Mouth Full of Ashes.

This was a lot of fun and a great introduction to the character. I hope we get more of these books.

True Crime is truly dark

Lean and mean True Crime is an origin story in the way that The Witch or Midsommar are origin stories but through a Badlands lens. Like, if Holly from Badlands was the one pulling the strings all along, was a far more willing participant and, by the end, self-actualizes and becomes what she always was, the one to truly be worried about and scared of.

LOVE the Splatter Western series

I've read a few of the Splatter Western entries and I've recommended the series to a few other readers who I think will like them. This entry didn't fully work for me. A lot of times in weird westerns or horror/western hybrids, supernatural or mythological creatures are mixed into the frontier setting. The "monsters" here are very human (which isn't a problem) but seem to have wandered in from another extreme horror novel. I found this a little jarring. Not a bad book overall but perhaps best to be aware going in what the lay of this frontier land looks like. Still love the series and eagerly await each new entry.

After the death of her son, Chris' grief is all consuming. She regularly visits the site of his death and talks to him. One night she sees his ghost outside her house. The reader gets to see just how deep Chris' grief runs and what she's willing to do to see her son again.

Crossroads is a deep examination of a mother in grief. The depths of her sadness are intimately explored and empathetically presented. You will genuinely feel for this character.

hardboiled 70s influence on Hap and Leonard

Scratches that 70s action itch. Joe Lansdale has acknowledged it as an influence on Hap and Leonard. Caveat: the book doesn't have the best portrayal of black characters. The narrative is constantly saying things like, "the black with the shotgun" for example. And the #2 character, Hump (the Leonard of the duo) runs awfully close to the "black buck" stereotype for much of the first half of the book (his main narrative action is sex and violence). The publisher's note says in part, "...reflects the cultural and sexual attitudes, language, and politics of the period" which is fair up to a point. If you look at racial presentations in contemporaneous crime fiction, specifically the works of Elmore Leonard, you don't find the same language or characterizations. It does work as a piece of action oriented, 70s hardboiled crime fiction but that caveat stood out.

Pronzini is an old pro who always delivers. This collection is no different. If you like Pronzini's work, you'll want to read this. If you are new to his work, this might be a good place to start.

I'm a long time Ruff fan and this one was great too. Read this before the series drops on HBO! Strong characters and very imaginative storie(s).
