What Was She Thinking?
Revisado: 08-09-23
Was it ego or just trying to save a dollar? Demonstrates that a good writer does not a narrator make! I’m visually impaired and this was my only way to “read” the book so I had to endure this awful narration. Perhaps it would have gotten more stars had it been read by a professional male narrator.

Historia
Lucy Barton is a writer, but her ex-husband, William, remains a hard man to read. William, she confesses, has always been a mystery to me. Another mystery is why the two have remained connected after all these years. They just are. So Lucy is both surprised and not surprised when William asks her to join him on a trip to investigate a recently uncovered family secret—one of those secrets that rearrange everything we think we know about the people closest to us.

He risks fraud to save his terminally ill infant grandson, matches wits with a renegade insurance investigator, is drawn into an act of savage violence, and falls deeply, excitingly in love with a young cellist who is a third his age.

Historia
Throughout antiquity Egypt was a land of hundreds of tiny villages, with constantly warring tribes, loosely divided between Upper and Lower Egypt. Then, in the space of a few extraordinary decades, the impossible happened. An incredible man, King Narmer (also known as Menes), united Upper and Lower Egypt. The First Pharaoh retells the story of Narmer and his epic journey, seen through his eyes and those of his Chief Scribe, the shaman Anhotek.

Not my usual read BUT....
Revisado: 02-20-13
Would you listen to The First Pharaoh again? Why?
There's so much history in the book that in a second read I would concentrate on the historic detail -- perhaps with supplemental material.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The First Pharaoh?
So many it's hard to pick. Overall the relationship between the Prince/King and the shaman Anhotek was always evolving, moving and memorable -- filled with life lessons..
What about Adam Hanin’s performance did you like?
His delivered a good performance. Readers may note certain quirks in his speech but certainly none that detract significantly from his performance.
Who was the most memorable character of The First Pharaoh and why?
Anhotek! I was most invested in this character. Perhaps it was his dedication, wisdom, love and perspective that engaged. The ultimate father figure.
Any additional comments?
A very good read made moreso by the attention to historic detail. You will be entertained and nourished.

Historia
Carson McCullers was all of 23 when she published her first novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. She became an overnight literary sensation, and soon such authors as Tennessee Williams were calling her "the greatest prose writer that the South [has] produced." The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter tells an unforgettable tale of moral isolation in a small southern mill town in the 1930s.

Revisado: 10-21-11
Cherry Jones gives Carson McCullers' compelling characters life and depth. Reading it was like a great theatrical perforamnce. Ms Jones' nuanced narration is in itself worth listening to. Add Ms. McCullers' compelling story and you have a winner. My first Audible book and I was hooked!

Two years ago, Eva Khatchadourian's son, Kevin, murdered seven high-school students, a cafeteria worker, and an algebra teacher. Because he was only 15 at the time, he received a lenient sentence and is now in a prison for young offenders. Telling the story of Kevin's upbringing, Eva addresses herself to her estranged husband through a series of letters. Fearing that her own shortcomings may have shaped what her son has become, she confesses to a long-standing ambivalence. How much is her fault?

Very good book so far but WARNING
Revisado: 04-11-10
I'm only several hours into the book which is very well written and engrossing. The narrator, however, sucks (pun intended) the joy out of the book. She has a smoker's voice and I think I can actually hear her taking puffs on a cigarette. She inhales, gasps and swallows. I want to scream -- stop smoking -- you're killing yourself. I must really like the book to put up with this huge distraction.
