Historia
For twenty years, Sciona has devoted every waking moment to the study of magic, fueled by a mad desire to achieve the impossible: to be the first woman ever admitted to the High Magistry at the University of Magics and Industry. When Sciona finally achieves her ambition and becomes a Highmage, she finds her challenges have just begun. Her new colleagues are determined to make her feel unwelcome—and instead of a qualified lab assistant they give her a janitor.

I really wanted to like it more.
Revisado: 11-08-24
As usual, this narrator is utterly brilliant (see Gideon the 9th)
The characters were good, not great as all bad guys were two dimensionality evil. There was some character development, which I liked.
For the story, I have one principle issue: predictability. If you listen to the first two hours and then to the final chapter, you will have missed very little of the plot.

The first time Eric jumped, he didn’t know he could fly. His world closed in as he stood on the bridge, a stale cigarette between his lips and breath that burned with the sour notes of yesterday’s coffee. The rushing water below was the chaotic calm that he needed, and he let charred memories crumble to ash and embers as his feet left the railing.

plot holes wide enough to drive a truck through
Revisado: 02-08-24
So, this story started out decently and collapsed into a hot pile of garbage by the end.
1) Inconsistent powers
2) Does no one use guns?
3) Characters in this autobiography can cuss, but they can't use contractions!?
4) Plot holes, so many plot holes.
5) There is character "development," but only as that which can be imagined by a teenager.
I would say that this is just a YA thing, but it is just a poorly written book. It is a kind of wannabe edgy take on urban fantasy that fails to properly build a world.

Sergeant Richard Stavos was a Technomancer, capable of creating stronger than normal mental links with nanites. But that alone wasn't enough to keep him alive. Not when the Ka Empire wages wars across the galaxy. Death was supposed to be his release...an end to the constant fighting that plagued his life. But gifted beings like Richard are assets, and almost a decade after his death, the Ka overlords bring him back from the grave as a "reward" for his good service.

Too little explanation of "game mechanics" to bring them into the real world. Do not recommend unless that is your thing. The Narrator was decent though

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

great narrator - try hard book
Revisado: 03-11-22
The author had three points to make: slavery is bad, progressive society is good, environmental destruction is our fault
These are all great points to make; extremely salient. My issue was the frequency with which and the melodrama with which I was constantly reminded. It was too much.

Revisado: 07-01-21
I am not a fan of an author removing my two favorite characters to write an extremely convoluted lead-in to the next book.
It was messy. The last hour or two was amazing. Everything else with a couple of notable exceptions was a drag...

Historia
It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

It was decent.
Revisado: 01-08-19
1) R.C. Bray is an excellent narrator. No question there.
2) The MC is boring. He is the cardboard cutout of a "downhome" cheeseburger eating-salt-of-the-earth protagonist who is incapable of change.
3) This is a bit of an odd one that I feel is worth pointing out: I get that Skippy can access all info everywhere forever (he is a mary sue/deus ex). Why is his personality so colloquially Earth >> American >> Pseudo Asshole >> Scientist? I could understand if it changed over time after meeting Joe. I could also understand if the personality were an affectation to manipulate Joe. Neither seems to be the case. Somehow this ancient AI has always had a very ordinary personality.
Bottom line: The book was "okay." I did enjoy some of the banter between Joe/Skippy as long as I ignored that plot hole. Skippy is OP. Joe is a cheeseburger. The rest of the crew reminds me of the kids from Captain Planet in both diversity and depth.

Former Marine Captain Alexander Hale only wanted a weekend out with some old buddies. He could have done without the gang war, the shootout, and...oh yeah, the alien abduction. Now he's in the middle of something he doesn't understand, never asked for, and is having quite possibly the greatest time of his life. Semper Fi and which way are the shores of Tripoli anyway?

It's an okay story.
Revisado: 11-28-18
I liked the "real world" aspect of this story. I didn't especially like that Alex turned into a quipping, generic super hero by the end of it. I would have preferred that he use the tactics and mindset he demonstrated at the beginning.
There were no real plot twists nor would I say there was any sort of emotional investment. So if that is what you are looking for, you are barking up the wrong tree.. I would recommend you read it the way you might read a standard issue comic book.
My last point is this: I get it. He's a Marine. He's a badass. Everyone who knows he is a Marine knows that he is also a badass. Stop rubbing my face in it and let Alex live his life without the constant reminders of his badass-ness. True badasses never need to advertise. True badass writers do not need to tell us that their main characters are badasses for us to know.
