Historia
From the author of Infinite Jest and Consider the Lobster: A collection of five brilliant essays on tennis, from the author's own experience as a junior player to his celebrated profile of Roger Federer at the peak of his powers. A "long-time rabid fan of tennis," and a regionally ranked tennis player in his youth, David Foster Wallace wrote about the game like no one else. On Tennis presents David Foster Wallace's five essays on the sport, published between 1990 and 2006, and hailed as some of the greatest and most innovative sports writing of our time.

Tennis Doctor is a self-help tennis book for adults. You could have 40-inch biceps, rapid anticipation, fancy feet, and a brilliant mind- but if you have poor swing mechanics, you will never win. On the contrary, you can have slow reactions, terrible footwork, and be 40 pounds overweight, yet still make a good shot if you can produce a perfect swing. By listening to Tennis Doctor, you own the secret to a perfect swing, and If we have to, we’ll call you an Uber to get you to the ball in time.

There are contradictions
Revisado: 12-05-23
Dr. Jha is clearly an expert on this topic. She is highly educated and has achieved a great deal of academic success. Unfortunately this book misses the mark. At times I think she builds a compelling argument for the “why” of mindfulness but there are definite moments where the writing (or narration) veers into the realm of opinion and personal bias.
This can distract the reader and causes some loss credibility. Specifically, there is a recurring theme in the book that Dr. Jha is upset by aspects of Hindu culture and perceived sexist cultural norms; I am sad to read this, though I think her perspective is valuable. Unfortunately, I don’t think she presents a balanced picture of either the culture or what might be unique to her personal upbringing. These generalizations start to feel like she is attacking a specific culture/religion and detract from the overall message of the book. It is somewhat ironic that the roots of mindfulness and meditation are traced back to the very religion and culture that causes her such latent animosity.

Historia
Tennis is more difficult mentally than most other sports. It feels more important than it is, has a diabolical scoring system, drawn out competitive matches are highly stressful, and losing can be very painful. During competition emotions get out of hand, fears and nerves are hard to control, and confidence comes and goes. This book attacks these and other issues faced by players of all levels. Dr. Allen Fox’s solutions are logical and straightforward and, most importantly, they have been tested on the court and they work.

Meh…good, not great
Revisado: 12-01-23
In the compendium of tennis related book, this one is pretty mediocre. There are a few scattered pearls but overall the book is meandering and lacks a clear thesis. I also left the book feeling more fatigued and annoyed about playing tennis, rather than having a sense of joy. Yes, tennis is a stressful game - but the author emphasizes that point to a degree that it makes me question if it is even worth playing.

It’s the Gita. You really can’t mess this up. Only docked a star by narration… dry tone and limited commentary.

We’ve been conditioned, from an early age, to believe that one day we’ll reach a moment of “arrival.” But no matter how much we achieve or acquire we still don’t feel as satisfied or as fulfilled as we thought we would be. Exhausted, we become burned out and cynical, questioning the purpose of it all.

1. Needs an accompanying worksheet
2. Structure is a little manic (many brief chapters)

Very interesting
Revisado: 08-12-23
This book is the crosswalk between science and meditation. A really good resource in anyone building a talk on “why” we should meditate, or what the proven benefits might be. At times it does get a little pedantic and somewhat repetitive, but overall worthwhile. I also purchased the book and read/listened simultaneously - I felt that helped with some of the more detailed neuroscience and neuro anatomy parts of the discussion.
