Mists and Metals with a Cosmere
Revisado: 01-22-25
Ok - I’m not spoiling - I enjoyed it, the key personalities from the previous Wax & Wayne tomes are back, older and…. Evolved… yet there are a few Mistborn characters intervening as well.
I enjoyed the ride, yet felt a little undone at the end - clearly Brandon has set me up for more from the Cosmere. When Hmmm?
Oh and Michael Kramer is amazing - The Wayne with accents and Teris people work is fantastic…

Space Opera as it should be

It’s a good yarn well told. I enjoyed it, you might too - I’m a bit of a tragic for space opera and quest based stories though…

Historia
Ida Pederson was an executive at ‘Nyberg Shoreline’ when she was sent to the small Northern Irish village of Port Kriel to diffuse tensions between the company and the local community. When an unexploded bomb was identified on the seabed near Nyberg’s windfarm, Ida sent a local crew of eight men to investigate. That night, only two men returned home, barely alive and unable to speak of what had happened out at sea.

Entertaining
Revisado: 10-27-24
It’s a good yarn with a good performance even authentic accents. It was entertaining yet on occasion the Folly (sound effects) distracted me from the story… for example a car without a battery will not engage the starter motor so there will only be a click, not a whir as the starter motor try’s to turn the engine over. Not a show stopper for the story, just a shame it brings down the great performances of the talented Actors

Historia
It seemed the unthinkable had happened. Someone had actually targeted the Ghalian, an order of assassins known and feared across the systems. It was madness. Only a fool would go after the likes of them. But, it seemed, the galaxy had no shortage of fools. Retaliation most bloody was in order, and one man stood ready to spring into action. Hozark was his name, and he was no ordinary man. He was a Master Ghalian, an assassin skilled in the ways of death. Practical, mechanical, magical, to him it made no difference.

Story entertains yet could do with less filling
Revisado: 12-02-23
The premise & the world building is fine. Yet the apparent twist is so painfully evident in the early story - so I was taken from the story and kept questioning what the characters were doing. The whole thing is needlessly protracted and at times quite twee…
The performance is solid but not stellar- I felt the central male assassin voice persona often failed to find gravitas

Entertaining yet ….
Revisado: 11-18-22
I enjoyed this enough to listen through to the end. And generally enjoyed the story. That said, I have 2 key concerns.
The superpowers really took me out of the story. The acquisition of them in both books came across to me as lame.
The other big distraction was the maniacal hatred from a President towards a smart arse - in reality a President get attitude regularly and moves on because they see the big picture. So again lame, the same plot outlines could be achieved without the personal vitriol ~ in fact I think it would work better if the President was just plain cold towards John.
The performance was great, the aliens were thought through including some thought on history, motivations and politics.
Worth a listen

Historia
Liora Day, half-human, half-mess-with-her-and-you’ll-die Damaclan, had been thrown onto a rough path at a very early age. But when she is broken out of a cage by Devren, the young captain of the SS Kratos, she is shown that perhaps humanity does have a heart. When the Kratos is set on a mission to rescue fallen surveyors from the Revolutionaries, Liora is given the choice to follow her Damaclan instincts, or trust Devren’s dark eyes and captivating smile that promise an adventure unlike any she has ever experienced.

Framework light, execution poor
Revisado: 10-14-22
It’s not the worst I’ve listened to, I actually finished listening. I found the plot devises trite and the performance wooden.
The story premise attracted me yet the execution is fraught with weaknesses in notable plot drivers and far too little ‘showing’ of scenes and situations.
This got worse through the series. Overall I feel like this is a 1st draft that has not had the notes from the editor applied. One particular Bomb stands out as an example where it’s very existence made no contextual sense yet is a major crux to the later storyline.
More work is needed on story craft.
As to the performance - the attempted voices were horribly distracting for the secondary characters from the attempted aristocratic voice of the brother to the screech of one of the others, then the horrible attempt at an Irish lilt. Just NO!
How this got sold and even supported to become an audio book series is a motivation to many writers - you can do it - even this stuff got published on Audible, you can do better yourself.

Entertaining yet full of Cheese
Revisado: 08-12-22
If you love your radio dramas ladened with Americana like a triple layer of melted Kraft cheese - then this is your sandwich.
Well produced, slick script with some classic 4th wall humour - it’s light, gritty, silly and self aware… missed a few paybacks - so I am keen to find out what happens to….. well that would be a spoiler wouldn’t it - go listen for yourselves

Is this a cowboy space opera?
Revisado: 03-27-22
No question there are similarities with Firefly - no brown coats just lots of ‘enemies’ and a hodgepodge collection of people in a space freighter trying to survive and make a new life after a war.
I enjoyed the romp, yet after getting through this 3 book minibus, I feel under fulfilled - the romance is Bujold like, lots of teasing. Conflict outcomes mostly rely on luck and the main characters do not reach their desired goals… making the core goals would resolve this and there would be plenty of new questions to hook for the next in the series.
Worth a credit for the 3 books, not sold on the series though.

I enjoyed the science with orbital mechanics and some nanotech key elements in the story. This is a well told story and the science believable.
