Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

A Magical Story with Depth and Humanity
Revisado: 06-23-05
As other reviewers have mentioned, this book is a bit slow to introduce J. Strange, however I did not find this a problem. I was actually drawn to keep listening to find out how he will be introduced into the story. The lives of several interesting characters are played out in beautiful, haunting, surreal settings and situations. The supernaturality, as opposed to deterring from the humanity of the story, serves to magnify it. This is a storytelling of depth and skill, entertaining and thoughful. I highly recommend it!

Sixteen thrilling and chilling stories by some of the greatest writers of horror and the supernatural, including Bram Stoker, H.P. Lovecraft, Charles Dickens, Ambrose Bierce, R.L.Stevenson, Guy de Maupassant and John Polidori, who is held to be the creator of the first vampire tale. An audio treat for Halloween or any other night when the moon is high, these stories are rich in imagination, humor, and characterization.

Superb Audio Quality, Interesting Stories
Revisado: 04-30-05
I usually look for stories that can keep my interest but aren't so suspenseful that I can't fall asleep, and this fits the bill perfectly. The stories are told with dramatic flair and some spooky music, which I liked in this case. The stories are old-fashioned and somewhat victorian, very well-written and here, very well-spoken. Although the files are about 4 hours long each, at least they are broken into two seperate files.

Historia
Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

Unbelievable!
Revisado: 09-19-04
I actually found myself fascinated by stories of stromatolites and geological societies... and i can listen to this over and over again without being bored, which is saying a lot because i usually have the attention span of a squirrel. Bill Bryson has given a gift to the world by illuminating important but typically dry information in a fascinating story-like book. I hope he will publish many more books like this, although his travel books are also among my favorites, especially A Walk in the Woods.
