Enjoyed the beginning but gave up
Revisado: 09-08-19
I really enjoyed the first third, made it through the middle third, and was unwilling to invest 9 more hours to finish it.

Historia
Victor and Eli started out as college roommates - brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Interesting premise but
Revisado: 08-07-16
An interesting premise but I didn't get emotionally involved with any of the characters. I did finish, but it was a bit of a slog. The narration jumping around in time also made it a little harder to follow as an audiobook.

Solid but not the best in this saga
Revisado: 09-04-15
I find this world to be interesting and engaging but the characters dithered quite a bit in this middle volume. Maybe more of a narrative sag than an arc. But loyal fans shouldn't be dissuaded.
I found myself disagreeing quite a bit with the voices used to portray the different characters. It might be because I've encountered the characters before and had preconceptions about how they sound, but I also think several of them were stranger and less likable in this recording.

Contemporary fantasy romps through comparative religion
Revisado: 07-11-15
It worked well as an audiobook because it didn't matter if I lost the plot from time to time. The narrative was engaging enough from moment to moment for that to be worthwhile in and of itself. Interesting speculation about metaphysics and magic.

A great listen and a good story
Revisado: 05-14-15
The Circle would probably be a quick read and worked particularly well as an audiobook. Maybe Eggers meant it to be read aloud. It was easy to follow, perhaps because so much of it was set in offices and near-future cyberspace that I could construct from stock mental imagery. Some books are harder, in that it takes me longer to envision the settings and I start to fall behind the narration or get distracted. The characters were also fairly simple creatures, requiring no slowing to get to know them, which seems very appropriate for a book about a world that turns on a social media axis (obligatory circle pun). The pacing was good. I "read" it in just a few days, finding a lot of extra time to listen, which is always a good sign. As for the main ideas of the novel, yes, it certainly taps into a certain zeitgeist, hopefully an extreme representation and not the way things are actually headed. At work today, taking time out of one process to respond to work-related social media, I felt like a character in the book. Good to be reminded of what not to become.

The Committee, an international cabal of industrialists and media barons, is on the verge of privatizing all information. Dear Diary, an idealistic online Underground, stands in the way of that takeover, using radical politics, classic spycraft, and technology that makes Big Data look like dial-up. Into this secret battle stumbles an unlikely trio: Leila Majnoun, a disillusioned non-profit worker; Leo Crane, an unhinged trustafarian; and Mark Deveraux, a phony self-betterment guru who works for the Committee.

Revisado: 03-08-14
This worked well as an audiobook. Some books seem less intended for the spoken word or, worse, fall apart when experienced more slowly. This one shone.
Really brief plot synopsis: In pursuit of permanence and beauty, the main character goes through some seriously dark places.

Moments of truth knit into a compelling story
Revisado: 10-26-13
I loved this. I work in a climate-related field and I really appreciated how she embedded science in a completely engaging story. Yes, it was ever so slightly didactic, but the emotional truth-telling more than made up for it, as planetary change whirled individual lives into larger patterns and brought different segments of society together. It worked well as an audiobook because each moment and scene stood on its own, and the slower pace than reading allowed me to savor the fine word choices. Never did I have to try to remind myself who a character was or where they fit into the plot. Kingsolver's voice also turns out to be perfectly pitched and paced to read her own work. I loved it. Did I say that?

One husband, 4 wives, 28 kids ...

I laughed and cried and came to understand a little more of the day to day realities of a polygamist household. The author's simple (but well-crafted) sentences made this a good listen.
