A Book that Made Me a Better Person

Best Translation, Wonderful Narrarator
Revisado: 03-22-24
The third time’s a charm! I tried two other versions before choosing this one, and, once I found it, I had no need to look further! Julie Rose translated this masterpiece into very understandable, modern English, and she brought out so much I would have missed in the earlier translations. This narrator completed the partnership! His voice made 60 hours very enjoyable and engaging, and his talent made each character distinct and recognizable. I wholeheartedly recommend this one, and I hope all of you will enjoy it as much as I did. The Brothers Karamazov, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, The Count of Monte Cristo, Til We Have Faces, Little Women, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Paradise Lost and … this one!

Excellent!
Revisado: 09-05-23
I had never read or heard Agnes Grey read until now, and I loved it from the start! Anne Brontë wrote a wonderful story, one which I feel ranks with Little Women, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and her own sister’s works, Jane Eyre! I whole heartily recommend it! Also, the narration is performed very well! Great job ti the actress who lent her talents to this worthy novel!

Historia
After the young Prince Edward VI of England and a peasant boy switch places, the "little king" tries to escape from a world in which he must beg for food, sleep with rodents, face ridicule, and avoid assassination. Meanwhile, the peasant, who is now the prince, dreads exposure and possible execution; members of the Court believe he has gone mad. As a result of the swap, both boys learn that social class, like so much of life, is determined by chance and random circumstance. With his caustic wit and biting irony, Twain satirizes the power of the monarchy, superstitions, and religious intolerance.

A Charming Story, Masterfully Written and Masterfully Narrated
Revisado: 08-20-23
This is my third book by Mark Twain. I have read about Tom and Huck, and I am happy to have just completed The Prince and the Pauper! It is a very charming story from beginning to end, and Mr. Field did a superb job reading it! He carefully and masterfully portrayed each character, and he showed the talent necessary to do so!

Mixing a bit of seventeenth-century French history with a great deal of invention, Alexandre Dumas tells the tale of young D'Artagnan and his musketeer comrades, Porthos, Athos, and Aramis. Together they fight to foil the schemes of the brilliant, dangerous Cardinal Richelieu, who pretends to support the king while plotting to advance his own power. Bursting with swirling swordplay, swooning romance, and unforgettable figures.

This is an excellent story, and Mr. Lee does a masterful job reading it! I listened to Mr. Lee read The Count of Monte Cristo, so he was the natural choice for me as I further introduced myself to the works of Dumas.

Might Be Jane Austen’s Best!
Revisado: 11-25-22
I enjoyed every part of this book! I knew of Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Emma long before I knew of this one, but Mansfield Park may have surpassed the others, in my estimation. I have read all of Ms. Austen’s novels, and this one is my favorite, with P&P the runner up. The story is great, and the narration in this version is wonderful!

Quite Possibly Tolstoy’s Masterpiece!
Revisado: 06-03-22
Oh, to have to the problem Tolstoy has: being one of the luminaries in the history of literature, and then having two titles competing for the honor of being your masterpiece! War and Peace is rightfully ranked on most Top 10 lists as one of the greatest novels ever written, and taking nothing away from that great title, in determining his Magnum Opus, I think Anna Karenina has my vote! This story drew me in immediately, and from the first page to the last, it did not disappoint! Also, I would be quite happy if this narrator read all the books I listen to on Audible! If I am going to spend nearly 40 hours listening to someone, I need to be able to connect with their voice, and, in my opinion, this gentleman delivered a world class performance!

Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage ( The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

Another Dickens Masterpiece!
Revisado: 04-19-22
What a great one this is! It’s certainly one of Dickens’ best, and the narrator does a fantastic job of bringing the story to life. As you listen, you will meet characters whom you’ll grow to love, some you will hate, and there some that will surprise you! Through it all, you will not be disappointed, and as I have done, you will walk away knowing why David Copperfield has been an enduring classic!

Entertaining … Brilliant … Profound
Revisado: 11-16-21
Well known as a timeless classic, but, perhaps, in my opinion, under celebrated and appreciated for the truly profound work that it is. It is unquestionably entertaining, unsurprisingly brilliant and profound to a scope few works achieve!
